All of the art work and collectibles being sold by Adams-Byrd Fine Art & Antiques have been collected and selected one at a time by the proprietor, an art historian with many years of training and experience in university art history departments, museums, galleries, and historic sites both in the U.S. and abroad. In most cases the pieces offered for sale on Ebay are from the business inventory (the business has been based in the Washington, D.C. area for many years). Our inventory is extremely large, so the majority of the pieces we are putting on Ebay have never been displayed in any of our retail locations. Occasionally, we are also selling pieces from our personal collection. The art and collectibles that we are offering to Ebay buyers are special and unique pieces that have been carefully “curated” by us.
This exceptional original painting on canvas is by one of Washington, D.C.'s most distinguished African American artists and art educators. This dazzling and dynamic presentation of a plant / flower in a pot has the look of a modernist stained glass panel with intense, almost gem like, colors.
There are several interesting articles and one video available online, so we will let you access those sources on your own. Gwen Aqui (Gwendolyn Aqui-Brooks), whose painting "The Jazzy Drummer" was purchased by the U.S. Department of State, has a long and distinguished career. She is a mixed media artist whose paintings and textiles (quilts and dolls / soft sculpture) are all dynamic masterpieces of vivid and exhilarating color. She describes her work as mostly Afro-Caribbean influenced. Her travels are often the inspiration and subject of her work.
Her undergraduate and graduate education in Washington D.C. contributed to her distinguished career as a DC artist and educator --- including years as an art teacher in the DC public school system.
The following bio is on the State Department's site (and is also on Gallery Serengeti's site):
Gwendolyn Aqui is a Washington, DC-based artist who specializes in mixed-media work, including painting, art quilts, one-of-a-kind dolls, and works on paper. Much of her inspiration comes from her travels to colorful places like Brazil, West Africa and Trinidad and Tobago. Her creative journey always begins with a circle and without pre-conceived drawings. Representations of figures, faces, patterns, plant forms, and symbols merge to produce dazzling compositions. Ms. Aqui has been honored with awards and exhibitions by countless revered institutions. Her works are in public and corporate collections both locally and abroad. Ms. Aqui received her BFA in Art Education from Howard University and a Masters Degree in Education from Trinity College. She is owner/director of The Climbing Tree Art Gallery and Art On Wheels.
The title "Still Life" is written on the backing paper of the frame. The painting is signed (in silver) ---- AQUI '94 [copyright symbol] ----- in one of the two white areas in the painting's lower right corner. The dark green frame is under 25" x under 31" x over 1". The frame does have a few slight scratches / marks / rubs from age / wear / handling. The painting was done almost 20 years ago. We do not know when it was custom framed; the label of a Silver Spring, Maryland frame shop is on the backing paper.
This spectacular signed original painting will be an important addition to many types of art collections ------ women artists, D.C. artists, African-American artists, black artists, flower / still life paintings, 20th century / modernist art, etc. .................
Gwendolyn Aqui-Brooks and her husband Bernard Brooks are living legends. They are two renowned American master artists.
This masterpiece by Gwendolyn Aqui, one of Washington's living art treasures, can become your own painted botanical treasure!
