For the money it is probably the most versatile large-diaphragm condenser mic. It is a Groove Tubes design that they later sold to Sterling Audio ....the components, construction and performance characteristics are pretty much identical, and one is just as good as the other. They have a patented, specially designed diaphragm element that utilizes a brass "umbrella" that physically enhances the low and mid response of the mic, and gives it lots more warmth that often escapes other large diaphragm mics of similar price and design. They worked with 3M and also developed a thinner and more sensitive (yet durable) mylar for the mic's element, and it also has superior performance by comparison. Anyone who is buying this type of mic should already know what they are for, (what they excel at and what their limitations are as well) it is a purpose-built mic, and it is good at what it does, just like it should be.....however use it for a situation or something besides what it was designed for, and you will probably be disappointed. Having said that, I will repeat that it is very good at what it is designed to do, just like it should be! If you need a versatile mic with excellent characteristics I would highly recommend these, and I can say that they are a wonderful vocal mic for the money, and worth every penny of it. I record vocals using the SHURE Beta SM-58 and the Sterling Audio St-55 placed about 12" behind the Shure 58. I have found that the SM-58 gives me the "live P.A." sound while the ST-55 covers all of the delicate nuances that the SM-58 cancels out or doesn't pick up.......the to of them together made an excellent vocal recording pair and drastically improved the overall sound and input volume of my vocals, which as a result allowed me to bring the levels up on the instruments....so the final result was a louder, clearer, punchier cd with no distorted or overdriven vocals. For the beginner or home recording artist who is looking for the better sound, this is the way to go. It is about $80 than others like it, but it's worth it. Good for everything from voiceovers to overheads, And a very accurate and pure-sounding mic for under $300 you can't go wrong.Read full review
as anyone who records or play's live music knows your mic is a key item. for me buying a used mic means taking it apart and checking out all of the mic ...a picture does not tell you if it has been abused or treated badly...testing all of the switches and really looking at the components! When i found the sterling on ebay i was really looking for that model after using a friends to record some tracks with ,I was not let down. When the mic arrived I looked her over over very closely ...it was perfect! When I fired her up it was a great sounding mic. I like to test used mic out before I buy as with money being tight I don't want a dud I don't think this mic had more than 1 hours time on it ...very happy
I bought this ST55 as a double for the one I already had so I could use them as stereo drum overheads. The ST55s have served that purpose very well, and they're also completely capable of capturing a great vocal track. They're well-made, and the response seems pretty flat. The best advice for recording is the most general: The better the source and room, the better the recording. Use the ST55 to that end and I think you'll be pleased with the milage you'll get from it.
This mic is really nice and good for the money! I actually love it and it is perfect for my voice. I do voice over and acting. It is very quite, sounds clean, crispy and flat enough to compete with some of the expensive ones out there! I highly recommend it.

I already owned a GT-55 Mic from Groove tube I bought on ebay. I wanted to record Stereo. So I bought the ST-55 Sterling model. When I got it home I tried it in stereo on all my mic pre's and found the signals levels matched on all mic pre's. I listened to the sound through head phones and there was no discernible difference between the two mics. I consider my self lucky to have two mic so well matched. I like these mics, they work well with my Trident S 20, My Presonus Digi FS-8, My Impact 2's from my Konnekt 48. I do not find I have to eq these mics to fix the sound. The pad and roll off help a great deal with matching the Mics to the volume and sound of the instrument I am tracking.
