This film bears many qualities of Kubrik's greatest films I only gave it a Good rating because it flaggs in a few places. However, it shines when compared to most other films. Ryan O'Niel gives a great performance as Barry who is beset by bad and good fortune as he travels a long and winding road through life from the bottom to the top and ... It is masterfully photogaphed and has a timeless quality. Kubrik was willing to dwell on certain scenes which allows them to have a fuller impact than would otherwise occur. I wouldn't call it a ROMP although it has comedic moments. It may be Kubrik's most daring film because he doesn't push the action but lets it come naturally. It is a great combination of drama and comedy with a masteful use of music! if you like British productions like thos on Masterpiece you will love this! Highly recommended!Read full review
Kubrick did a wide variety of films but BL stands apart for the sheer beauty of every frame. It was if each frame were a painting capturing the color and texture of an era gone by. The story is a timeless one of a lad gone awry in a world that has no privileges for the common man. He becomes allied with a professional gambler and seeks his fortune through the gambling parlors of Europe which lead to his marriage to beautiful Countess whose eldest son cannot abide Barry for his social climbing ways. This is a long movie with an intermission (no longer done) and should be enjoyed as a visual work of art and somewhat of a history lesson of the era. It is enjoyable and stands the test of time.
To begin with Barry should never have traveled alone during highwaymen infested England. He should have made better use of the money left him on the battlefield and made a better life--what happened to it? He should have known where he was traveling to during those hard times instead he fell into the allied army! He should have left well enough alone when he married Lady Lyndon, ; loved her, left Bullindon alone, after all the fortune wasn't his except through her signature. He was selfish, an opportunist, shyster, hustler, cheat, bully, and never knew when he was ahead. Still, he'd never survive without a title and his Jezebel mother finished the job of doing him in! Anyway, he lost a leg and got a 500-pound yearly gratuity in the entire show which in all probability he squandered!

This movie tells the story of Barry Lyndon as he travels through life, encountering danger & romance at every corner. Beautiful costumes, unprecedented natural lighting, and fun fencing scenes all make this film worthwhile. The story has some points of interest, too. Not for children -- some of Lyndon's adventures are particularly immoral.
