I have owned this television for about three years, and while I have watched plasma and LCD technology evolve with great interest, I still feel that there is nothing on the market that compares with this set in terms of picture quality. The closest you will get is with the latest generation Pioneer Kuro's (the PRO 111FD, etc.) which are excellent televisions in their own right, but still have many of the limitations inherent to the medium. Should you find one of these, or the previous model, the much-revered KD34XBR960, I suggest picking it up. Even should the cabinet be scratched, you can replace the rear case and/or the front beznet assembly relatively inexpensively (about $120. for the rear cover and $137. for the beznet assembly). I found the latter out inadvertantly when I moved recently and the movers, in spite of my having had a custom crate built to house my TV, managed to scratch the bezel. $400 later (parts and labor) my Sony looks as fresh as the day it rolled out of the factory. No, this TV is not sleek and sexy like the current flat panels, nor is it a status symbol, but if you want the ultimate in PQ, this set is hard to beat.Read full review
I once sold one of these sets to a friend when i did this for a living. This was unfortunately right when they had stopped making this one.I set it up and calibrated it using the Digital Video Essentials DVD and was AMAZED at how good the picture looked!!!It even passed the infamous Snell and Wilcox test pattern torture test!Been on the hunt for one of these ever since. If you want to get black levels that even come close to what this old school tech CRT(Cathode Ray Tube)set is capable of.You will have to spend some thousands for a plasma or one of the new OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diode)sets. The ONLY draw backs are it's bulk, weight and lack of 1080p capability(it does 1080i however)If you can handle those and want to see standard NTSC and High Definition ATSC at their best.Find this set and BUY IT!Read full review
Wanted tube crt. Seller seemed like honest guy and felt it was a good value. You have to compare a crt and see the difference in high def. I know size of set is tremendous, but if you want the finest detail in small room, 34" is still the best period. Shame that Sony removed some previous features of 960, but tuner for ASTC works excellent for rooftop reception. Yes, some people do watch over the air
The tv is in excellent condition and is great for hd video games and blu-ray. If you don't mind the size and care more about picture quality its a great tv, and cheaper too.
For fast motion, clarity and reliability I couldn't think of a better set to purchase. I've owned one for 3 years and just purchased another after looking at the flat panels available for up to 5x what this set costs, if you can find one.
