Medieval Manuscript Fragment, as found.  Black leather binding with working clasps measuring  5 1/4" x 3 1/2" x 1 3/4".  Binding probably dates from the 19th century, and features silk endpapers.  Bookplate on front board identifies the book as having been part of the collection of Edward Arnold, of Dorking, Surrey; the present book appears to be the remains of number 615 in the catalogue of his collection (a limited edition of the catalogue was published by his heirs in 1921, and the text can be found online via a Google search).  There the description reads:
615. B. M. v., cum Calendario, illuminated MS, on vellum, 252 11.

[Flemish 15th century], 7 full-page illuminated miniatures with designed
and floriated borders, decorated with angels, birds, fruit, and grotesque
figures, over 250 of the pages having beautiful painted leafy borders
heightened with gold, with many hundreds of illuminated initial letters,
stout small 8vo, modern black morocco extra, with metal clasps, gauffred
gilt edges Sa:c. XV

This binding matches the one described; the remaining leaves are certainly gilt-edged. There remain two blank vellum leaves attached at the front; one bears the numeral 615,
and there are other marks and notes as well. Six loose leaves are present; three are numbered in pencil 181, 193, and 200, with the rest unnumbered. Still attached to the binding at the back
(in varying degrees of secureness) are five more leaves: two blanks, one final leaf of the manuscript as originally written, and two leaves with a later, sixteenth-century prayer written in French. I have
not been able to identify this French prayer through a Google search; it may be unique to this book. It reads, in part:

O s.re Ihesu crist je te a.re en
croys pendant et portant
couronne despine . . .
Je te prie que ta crois me
deliure [etc]

[Roughly translated: 'O Lord Jesus Christ, I [pray] to you on the cross and bearing the crown of thorns . . . I pray you that the cross deliver me...]

The pages that remain are undecorated, except for some words or letters in red, and some letters touched in yellow which has largely faded. The main script is a fairly tidy French or Flemish
batarde; the script of the added prayers in French shows some letter forms reminiscent of contemporary secretary script.

In total then, a nineteenth-century binding that enables one to trace the book's provenance; six loose leaves (and one attached leaf) in a nice fifteenth century script; two further leaves with a sixteenth-century addition
in a sixteenth-century hand; four blank vellum leaves, possibly original, possibly later, all still attached the binding as endleaves. 9 leaves of manuscript; thirteen vellum leaves total.

Given that the catalogue description quoted above identifies many of the leaves of the original volume as highly decorated, while none of the remaining leaves are, one can only conclude that the
book has been dismantled to split up for separate sale of most of the leaves. I am not inclined to further the destruction of this or any other manuscript, and so I offer this as a single lot.

Perfect for a scholar's or library's collection of fifteenth-century books; priced at 100.00 per written page, throwing in the rest.
