I read the reviews before I purchased this book and thought I knew what I was getting into.Having read a number of books about diet and nutrition, my interest was piqued after I had seen the authors justifying the "salty" tone of their book on the Today Show a while back and had always been curious...I mean, who can resist something salty? Plus, I felt I was already kind of a bitch- why not go the whole way and be a skinny bitch? Anyway, being known to swear like a sailor myself, I bought the book thinking it couldn't be nearly as offensive as the old church ladies said! Basically, I have determined that these women figured if they dropped the F-bomb a few times while talking about vegtables, maybe said vegetables would become more interesting and people would eat them? There's broccoli and then there's fucking broccoli. Now that's a green veg we can all get down with! In a way I see their point. Tough talk, tough love on some tough issues. Ok. I get it. If you can get by the middle school shock-talk, there's some facinating information regarding the USDA and other asinine government agencies. The information they provided with regards to dairy COMPLETELY changed me and hence, I will never, EVER eat dairy again...it was that compelling. Though I think many people will be turned off by the suggestion of going completely vegan, the information is very, very good and if you are completly confused about what to eat and what to put into your body, buy this book. Just don't share it with your Gram!Read full review
Quick read. Very opinionated book, uses a lot of crass language, not for the sensitive type. These women give it to you straight and appear to have done their research (over 300 sources for this over 100 page read). This is definitely a book for people serious about changing their lifestyle and eating habits, a pro-vegan outlook. An open-mind is necessary when reading this book. Don't be afraid of change or doing something to improve your life. Recommended food is organic, which yes - costs more up front, but the money saved on doctors, hospitals, other medical bills over the course of your life should be considered, and in the end will save you money. If you are looking for something other than they regular quick-fix diet plans - read this book. I highly recommend it!
What I liked- These women are very straightforward when it comes to making their point. I LOVE that. They did not "sugar coat" anything- no pun intended! They also blow the whistle on our government agencies that are supposed to protect us while they are really just lining their own pockets without regard to our health. What I didn't like- I do not agree with a total vegan diet. They are 100% against all animal products. I believe if you are smart about what types and sources of animal products you choose, you can still be a "skinny bitch." I bought the book because I heard it was a good book. I also and tired of being an overweight woman and needed a little bit of a pep talk to get me inspired to do something about the food I eat. I would recommend this book to anyone who is ready for a change in food choices, and who is also strong enough to be be insulted like a new recruit at basic training. They do it in a very amusing way!Read full review
I find this book quite inspirational as a diet motivator - their straightforward style and "bossy girlfriend" tone really hit home. I'll come to this again and again when diligence falters. But be warned - this book hits the "GO VEGETARIAN" pretty darned hard. However, as grossed out as I am at the meat industry, chemical additives, etc. I just can't go totally vegetarian due to health issues. I am more and more careful about additives, chemicals, have cut WAY down on soda (from all day every day to just one or so a week) so my overall intake has been quite swayed. Can't wait to get the cookbook by them!
Than this is the book for you. Pretend Rush Limbaugh mated with PETA (yes, the whole organization) - these two could be their pretentious, overbearing daughters, with an extra heaping spoonful of bully added to their personalities, as well. They write as if their readers are complete morons. I can appreciate their straight talk about the food that we eat, and I found some of it informative and even, at times, quite funny. However, I don't appreciate reading that I need to get my "cankles" to a health food store. Their assumption of their reader (fat, slob, pig, etc) is not particularly likely to help those that they are presumably trying to help. As everyone past elementary school knows, bullying is not a very effective way to promote change. At any rate, it's easy to see that they are just trying to cause hype to sell more books. It might work. I don't think that the general population will be able or willing to follow the extreme way of life that they preach. They should be writing for an animal rights newsletter, because most of the book is based upon your need to be a vegan, complete with gross-out animal product stories. I can understand where they are coming from - I am a vegetarian too, and I get grossed out by meat sometimes, but I wasn't reading this book to learn about animal holding and slaughtering conditions. If you like being yelled at via paper, or if you think you would enjoy a restrictive dietary boot camp, then by all means you might enjoy this book. Otherwise, save your money. I was very thankful that I got this book from the library - it isn't worth the money.Read full review
