What a fantabulous movie. I think I enjoyed it even more due the fact I'm Catholic. I identified with the little girl and her antics and then when she was forced to become a nun and go under the supervision of Mother Superior, it brought back all of her past memories and it reminded her just how much she disliked being in such a regimented situation. I have watched this movie so many times my husband just groans when he hears the music. One act of kindness to help a wronged woman, witness to a brutal murder, leads us into a way of life in a convent. Shows how two women who oppose one another come to respect each others way of life and in the end they become the best of friends. Sister Mary Clarence,Whoopi Goldberg, because of her love of music, brings a dying Catholic parish back to life and the result of music expertise causes the Pope to come to the parish and hear the nuns sing their new way of expressing themselves in an upbeat performance of reworded everyday music. A definite family oriented movie except for the murder scene. I give it 6+ Stars (5 being the highest rate) I just love this movie and finally purchased it in the DVD format. My VHS is so beat up, I doubt if it will play anymore.Read full review
This is a story about a nightclub singer in Reno Nevada who's married lover is a hit man. She becomes aware of his profession after witnessing a murder he orders. She goes to the police for protection, and they hide her in a convent in San Francisco until they can bring her lover to trial. Only one of the officers knows her location because there's a leak in the office and all the other witnesses end up disappearing. Needless to say it's hard to hide a lounge singer in a convent! Whoopie is terrific in the lead role. Many of the actors are well known in other movies in their own right. None of them are professional singers but they pull it off wonderfully.

Bette Midler made a terrible mistake turning down this juicy role which seem tailor made for Whoopi - you will actually laugh out loud (when did you last do that watching a movie or TV program?) - you don't need to be Catholic or even religious to enjoy this delightful romp - the singing is stirring - not just another comedy - ranks with Whoopi's debut performance in "Purple" as a movie one can see again and again.

I've watched this movie a couple of times and don't ever tire of it. The music is phenomenally gorgeous and transports me into a space of spirit. The acting is really engaging and Whoopi Goldber, Maggie Smith, and Kathy Najimy are terrific. The entire cast is marvelous. The plot is humorous and having the Pope visit the church was deLIGHTful!

A mobster's girlfriend cum trashy lounge singer is sent to a convent under the Witness Protection Program, and leads the choir there to national fame. This movie is excellent. The characters are hillarious and well-acted. A great cast and some wonderful songs, makes this movie a sure winner.
