This is a major upgrade over the Octalink-designed crank set I bought it to replace. I installed it on my bike a year ago and on my wife's bike last week. After 1 year on mine, there has been no need to remove, clean, and re-grease the bearings, and there has been no creaking or other noises. The bearings seem stiffer, too, as they are positioned farther outboard in the bracket than the original crank on these bikes. In short, I like not having to clean and re-grease 2 or 3 times per year due to creaking after heavy use. I will enjoy doing it once per year as normal winter maintenance. It sure makes this crank seem more durable and stiff than the old Octalink design I replaced.

Since the new bike market is moving away from square taper, it's getting more difficult to find a high quality, affordable, square taper bottom bracket. It's the same old song, only I'm not going to sing it, I'm just going with the flow. I'm a heavy rider (fat&muscly) and I destroy the low priced square taper bottom brackets, which was what my commuter bike had, although my mountain bikes have had external for years now. I'm not so hung up on square taper than I'll spend nearly what this entire crank cost on just a fancy bottom bracket. Found this little gem of a deal, and now my commuter bike has a much stronger bottom end. Whoever says square taper cranks don't have discernible flex doesn't weigh nearly 300lbs. Baahhh!

Cranks were put on a Diamondback Recoil to upgrade the bike and lose a little weight to improve x-country riding. Much better cranks than the inexpensive unit that was on the bike. Makes a big difference in stiffness area alone. Shimano has a better middle level line of parts for MTBs than anyone on the market.

Very nice looking product and i got all the bearings and so on to go with it and it was easy to install and all went well and pedals around on the road really nice and smooth with easy shifting from cog to cog, recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their old school ride like i did and looks really great on my old school mountain bike. Doing away with the old school spindle and bearings and cups was a great idea.

I replaced a FSA crankset in my 2005 Santa Cruz Blur Lt with this one. It was very easy to install and works as good as the FSA only weights a little more.
