This is a vintage woodcut engraved portrait titled "Colonel E.D. Baker." and an engraving titled "Death of Colonel Baker While Leading His Regiment at the Battle of Ball's Bluff, Va., October 31st, 1861."  The engraving is in very good condition and was published in Frank Leslies Illustrated History of the Civil War in 1895.  The portrait and print were originally published during the Civil War in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. The accompanying text describes Col Baker as commanding the First California Volunteers when he was killed at Ball's Bluff.

Edward Dickinson Baker (February 24, 1811 – October 21, 1861) was an English-born American politician, lawyer, military leader. In his political career, Baker served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois and later as a U.S. Senator from Oregon. A long-time close friend of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, Baker served as U.S. Army colonel during both the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. Baker was killed in the Battle of Ball's Bluff while leading a Union Army regiment, becoming the only sitting senator to be killed in the Civil War.

********************************************************

The Battle of Ball's Bluff, also known as the Battle of Harrison’s Island or the Battle of Leesburg, was fought on October 21, 1861, in Loudoun County, Virginia, as part of Union Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's operations in Northern Virginia during the American Civil War.

While a minor engagement in comparison with the battles that would take place in years to follow, it was the second largest battle of the Eastern Theater in 1861, and in its aftermath had repercussions in the Union Army's chain of command structure and raised separation of powers issues under the United States Constitution during the war.

From Wikipedia

The overall size is approx. 8 by 11 inches. The paper is fragile and mildly age toned.  There is text or other  illustrations on the reverse side. This is not a modern reproduction or reprint. It is a vintage print, over 105 years old and guaranteed to be as described.

Woodcut engravings were used in the illustrated newspapers in the middle of the 19th century. To create a woodcut engraving, an artist would first draw his illustration on paper either from direct observation or from dagueorrotypes, or early photographs. Skilled workers would transfer the drawing to the surface of a very hard block of wood. Then the engravers went to work, carving into the wood to produce an original engraved block, from which plates were made for printing the images. This technique was used to create the pictures we find in Harper's Weekly and other illustrated publications including Ballou's Pictorial, Frank Leslie's publications, and Gleason's Pictorial.
