This is the most easy to read and most comprehensive book of sail principles, design, even the art of building them, and sailing them. Ross was a sail-maker himself. Its all you want to know and it covers all conventional sails. But it never gets too technical. It is written in basic, conversational English, all you will have to learn is the names of the parts of the sail and the parts of the boat, which is something any self-respecting sailor should know. It explains everything clearly in an entertaining and easy to understand way. Ross takes the position of being your wise adviser and explaining in sufficient detail the questions of why. It's a fat book in page size and thickness of binding and the layout takes advantage of the size to provide illustrations and many pictures of actual sailboats carefully photographed at just the right angle to show their trim differences to illustrate the text. Don't be put off by its age. It was very advanced when it first was published because of the photos of air flow around sails to show the behavior that is described in the text. These pictures are still very true and valid today and graphically illustrate important points of sail handling. The physical laws of nature have not changed much over the years and all the points Mr. Ross makes are still very true. There is nowhere I can say he's got it wrong and we know better now, nowhere. I had my copy for years and then gave it to a novice sailor who ended up keeping it (must have liked it?). A short while later I missed my copy so badly I had to go and get another one. I was lucky and nobody bid against me on eBay, so I got it for a song. Read and study this book, and then go sailing. You can put your knowledge immediately to good use.
