STATUE OF LIBERTY BRIEF BACKSTORY
The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the World) was first conceived in 1865 by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi of France as a gift from the French people to the United States. The dream began to take root after plans for the statue was unveiled at the United States centennial exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Bartholdi began work on the statue in Paris, France after fundraising efforts in the U.S. and France took root. Copper for the outer skin was obtained from Visnes, Norway and donated by the firm of Japy Freres. Upon completion of the Statue of Liberty in 1884, it was ceremoniously deeded over to the U.S. on July 4th of that same year. The 151 foot tall Statue of Liberty was then dismantled, packed up and shipped off to America where it would be reconstructed in the New York Harbor on Liberty (Bedloe’s) Island in the center of the eleven point star shaped Fort Wood on top of a granite façade and concrete core pedestal.
What few know is that the Statue of Liberty’s Pedestal was designed by noted architect Richard Morris Hunt. The pedestal’s construction began on April 18, 1883. Standing 89’ tall, the outer façade, of what’s considered one of the heaviest masonry pieces ever built, is comprised of granite from Leete’s Island, Connecticut. The pedestal was completed and readied for the Statue of Liberty on April 22, 1886.
The reconstructed statue on its pedestal was finally dedicated on October 28, 1886 to great fanfare. One hundred years later, The Statue of Liberty went under restoration work with funds made available by the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Foundation, Inc.
The Statue of Liberty stands now, as it did , in 1886 as a symbol of freedom for Americas as well as a symbol of hope for those coming to the United States looking for a better life.
