This is a SUPERIOR EXAMPLE of a VERY 8 DAY RARE EARLY MINIATURE ROSEWOOD Seth Thomas mantel clock in NEAR ALL ORIGINAL CONDITION made circa 1865 WITH THE RARE LYRE MOVEMENT.

This is American History at its finest! Seth Thomas was noted for making extremely high quality clocks. Seth Thomas was an apprentice to the famous Eli Terry around 1810. He sent off on his own and founded the Seth Thomas Clock Company, which was in the family until the 1960s! The reason they stayed in business is that Seth Thomas Sr. and all of his ancestors insisted upon building high quality clocks – clocks you could depend on. His home town even named the town after him “Thomaston, Conn.”

This clock has the original heavy duty LYRE 8 DAY TIME AND STRIKE movement.

Everything is original with the exception of the correct replaced dial. The rosewood case is in very beautiful condition and has a very beautiful original finish. The case is outstanding. The sides are outstanding. The top and bottom glass is the original wavy glass with the original reverse picture in superior condition. The movement runs very well and keeps good time.

The movement was just cleaned, oiled, pivots polished and bushings added where needed.

This clock will not need servicing for many years to come, and is ready for the next 100 years! This is a labor intensive service, with many clockmakers charging 250.00 and up. We recommend having it oiled every 2 to 3 years to keep it in tip-top shape! With the purchase of this clock for an additional $ 2.25 we will include an oiler kit with a professional oiler loaded with enough oil to oil approximately 50 clocks with easy instructions so you could even do it yourself! It has the heavy duty rare lyre time and strike movement signed Seth Thomas Plymouth. In this listing we offer a one of the first Seth Thomas clocks to bear the town of Thomaston on the Label. There have been many attempts to investigate when labels using the town name Thomaston began, changing from Plymouth Hollow. Mr. Willard did extensive research on this subject and the correct answer is January 25, 1865. Seth Thomas died in 1859 and many of the residents of Plymouth Hollow wanted to change the name of their town of Thomaston to honor Mr. Thomas. The original town name was just Plymouth with the first post office using this name opening on January 1, 1803. Plymouth had an area called the "Hollow" which is where Seth Thomas built his factory but the Hollow never had a post office of its own. On December 22, 1831, the town of Plymouth was divided with the name of the one section changed to Terrysville to honor the Terry family who made clocks in that part of town. A new post office in Plymouth Hollow opened on July 7, 1837. After Thomas died Congress and the Connecticut legislature were petitioned to change the name of Plymouth Hollow to Thomaston to honor Thomas. Congress approved the petition before the state did and the post office changed its name on the official records on January 25, 1865. After waiting another ten years the state legislature was again petitioned and Thomaston was officially incorporated in 1875. The first Seth Thomas clocks made with Thomaston on the label were produced in 1865. The movements continued with the name of Plymouth Hollow until the old dies were worn and new ones with Thomaston could be made. According to a statement by a ,man who worked for Seth Thomas in the Waterbury American newspaper dated February 24, 1868, the first clock with a Thomaston label was made in November of 1865.

The clock strikes the hour on the hour on a really great, bold sounding gong.

The back of the clock is original.

This clock has its original paper label on the inside in very good condition, signed Seth Thomas Thomaston.

. This clock measures – 16 ½ inches high, 10 ½ inches wide and 4 inches deep. The name Seth Thomas is synonymous with high quality and good taste. Not always the first on the scene with the latest movement "improvement" or flashy case style, Seth Thomas was slow to adopt changes and only when the marketplace had given it acceptance to other companys' breakthrough advances would Seth Thomas slowly and carefully bring their high quality clocks to the marketplace. The results, however, were always the same. When the Seth Thomas clock arrived it was an instant success and it captured the market.

As the years have passed, the quality of Seth Thomas clocks has been proven over and over. They are the best.

This clock will be packed VERY VERY CAREFULLY by our “award winning” (receiving a perfect “10” from a gracious customer) packing department

(my wife) to insure a safe delivery and the buyer is to pay $19.50 for shipping and ins. I have always hated that "reserve" when I have bid myself so this fine clock has no reserve and a very low starting bid. We love these clocks and I will be glad to help you set up your new clock, or answer questions long after the sale via email. We accept payments in any manner you wish to send them.
