Complete Set of (4), very rare and wonderful, original ca1780 Copper-Plate Engravings depicting Native American Indians doing various activities supposedly in Canada. This series of fantastic Views are titled "Vue De Canada" I,II,III, and IIII. These outstanding Views each measure approx. 5” by 6 3/4” (plate size) and each include wide margins on all edges (sheet sizs are approx. 7 1/4" by 10 1/4"). They are printed on laid paper and were produced ca1780.

These are rather fanciful depictions of the leisure, hunting and savaging activity of Native American Indians. Many of the Indians pictured wear feathered headdresses and some "grass" skirts. The landscape is atypical of Canada with two of the Views containing extensive tropical foliage. These seem mor a romanticized than a historic depiction of the Indians of the region and were surely published to appeal to the tastes and expectations of those unfamiliar with the region and its native peoples.

We have included a number of scans below which give a good indication of the content of these wonderful 18th century Engravings. Each carries the name of the artist “Coxen” and the engraver “Test” in the margin below the image area and each is expertly executed and quite beautiful.

We were able to find only a single example of any of these Views after an extensive search (including in WorldCat). The Library and Archive of Canada holds an example of “I Vue de Canada” (1st View of Canada) - the first in this series but does not have examples of any of the other 3 Engravings in the series and we could find no record of any of these other three Views in any Library or Museum Collection.

These wonderful Engravings of Native American Indians came to us as a part of a simply amazing archive of 17th 18th and a few 19th century maps, views and portraits related to the French and British colonies in North America. The Archive was put together in the mid 19th century by a Canadian collector and contains many items of great rarity and beauty. All of the items in this archive are exceptionally well preserved with most exhibiting no wear or damage of any kind. There are over 160 items in this archive and we have been offering these rarities over the past few months as part of our regular, weekly eBay auctions.

These rare and fascinating Views of Native American Indians in Canada are in excellent condition - clean and crisp and stunningly beautiful. There is no soiling, staining, significant damage and no repairs of any kind to the image areas and only some very light soiling to the large, original margins. The strikes are dark and bold and the Views are uncolored "as issued" ca1780. Overall these wonderful Engravings are exceptionally well preserved and will display beautifully with a quality matting and framing.

A VERY rare and wonderful, Set of Four, ca1780 Copper-Plate Engraving of Views of Canada depicting Native American Indians and a fantastic addition to any collection!!

Overseasshippping is extra and cost will be quoted at bidders request. Massachusetts residents must add 6.25% sales tax.

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.
