Album Notes
This 4-CD set with 107 songs (47 previously unreleased) includes a 64-page booklet with liner notes and rare photos.Emphasizing regional and traditional ethnic music, ROOTS N' BLUES not only covers the blues, but a variety of other American folk music including country, bluegrass, cajun and gospel.Roots n' Blues: the Retrospective presents five hours of music over four discs, covering the traditional recordings made by Columbia Records and its associated labels from 1925 to 1950. As an all-inclusive survey of American roots music, this set is an invaluable library piece and a good reference, but where this collection really stands out is in its presentation. The collection does a better service than the more academic studies by including a variety of styles -- including early string band recordings, spirituals, jugbands, blues, cajun and country music, mixing the better known artists with the more obscure -- in the end, the diversity makes for good listening as well as a good learning experience. ~ Chris Woodstra

This collection of CD's is comprised of 107 tracks.....over 5 hours of music from what Columbia Records calls its Golden Era...1925 to 1950. "Among the musical genres covered are: boogie-woogie, white and black string bands, cajun music, white and black blues artists, spiritual and gospel music, jug-bands, country music, and some very early indications of rythym and blues." This boxed set has been opened but it appears that, aside from disc 1, it was never played. There is nothing wrong with Disc 1, it just looks like it was played.
