Up for auction is a Ficus natalensis root over rock Bonsai. Called Strangler Fig for its grasping roots.
This Ficus was grown for over a year to root it firmly to the rock.
Picked out in the nursery as one of the most interesting tree / rock combination.
Root over Rock bonsai are developed by placing a rooted cutting in the 1st year of its development over a rock and binding the roots in place with grafting tape. The tree and rock is then planted deep in organic nursery soil and over the next 2 years the soil is dropped progressivily exposing the roots as they thicken and develp. In the 2nd year they are planted in bonsai soil and the training is continued.
This tree is 2 years in development. It is fused beautifully to the rock. As the tree develops in further years it will be a real specimen root over rock.
This tree was styled by Erik Wigert, owner of Wigert's Bonsai Nursery in North Ft Myers, Florida. In 2008 at the "1st National Bonsai Exhibition" in Rochester, NY he was awarded "Best Tropical Bonsai" for his Purple Bougainvillea.
Root over Rock is such a fun style of bonsai. A people's favorite. This is a tree that you will enjoy for many years.
