This is a fine antique engraving titled "Newcastle & Gateshead. From the West House Bank." published in a collection of British topographical views in the 1842 It is in excellent condition and was engraved from an original drawing by J. W. Carmichael. Fine view of the River Tyne.

An exquisite antique print!

The first records of coal being mined in the Gateshead area was in 1344. As trade on the Tyne prospered there were several attempts by the burghers of Newcastle to annex Gateshead. In 1576 a small group of Newcastle merchants acquired the 'Grand Lease' of the manors of Gateshead and Whickham. In the hundred years from 1574 coal shipments from Newcastle increased elevenfold while the population of Gateshead doubled to approximately 5,500. However, the lease and the abundant coal supplies ended in 1680. The pits were shallow as problems of ventilation and flooding defeated attempts to mine coal from the deeper seams.

William Hawks, originally a blacksmith, started business in Gateshead in 1747, working with the iron brought to the Tyne as ballast by the Tyne colliers. Hawks and Co. eventually became one of the biggest iron businesses in the North, producing anchors, chains and so on to meet a growing demand. There was keen contemporary rivalry between 'Hawks' Blacks' and 'Crowley's Crew'. The famous 'Hawks' men' including Ned White, went on to be celebrated in Geordie song and story.

Throughout the industrial revolution the population of Gateshead expanded rapidly; between 1801 and 1901 the increase was over 100,000. This expansion resulted in the spread southwards of the town.

In 1854, a catastrophic explosion on the quayside destroyed most of Gateshead's mediaeval heritage, and caused widespread damage on the Newcastle side of the river.

From Wikipedia

It is printed on a fine quality paper blank on the reverse side. The original plate marks are present, an interesting indicator of the printing process and the age of such a print. The overall size is approx. 8 by 10.50 inches.  This is not a modern reproduction or reprint. This is a vintage engraving, over 160 years old, and guaranteed to be as described.

Steel Engraving: A print produced by carving the lines of an image into a metal plate (copper or steel) with a tool called a burin. The lines produced by the carving are inked, and a dampened sheet of paper is pressed on to the plate. The ink is transferred to the paper producing the image. This type of printing was introduced in the 15th century and is a form of intaglio printing.
