Antique Reclaimed Hand Hewn Wood Mantel - 100 Years Old Barn Beam

I'm pleased to offer a beautiful OAK hand-hewn reclaimed fireplace mantel.  These beams were painstakingly hand-hewn on all four sides in the late 1800’s by tobacco farmers. The beams are absolutely beautiful, with unbelievable character from years of exposure to the elements and are sure to be a conversation piece in any home.

All of our hand-hewn mantels are reclaimed in an environmentally conscious manner from storm damaged tobacco barns in the mountains of Southeastern Kentucky.  We strive to help farmers recycle their barns in an ecologically responsible manner, to help ensure that our actions and decisions today do not inhibit the opportunities of future generations.

The Life of One of our Reclaimed Mantels

These beams were cut from old-growth tight grain virgin timber in the Cumberland Gap area of the Appalachian Mountains; just minutes from what is now the Daniel Boone and Thomas Walker State Park’s.   Along the Wilderness Road, an estimated 200,000 early settlers blazed into the Appalachia’s in search of Kentucky’s fertile land and abundant game.

Tobacco became the lifeblood for many early farmers.  Various styles of tobacco barns were resurrected throughout Southeastern Kentucky to aid in the essential process of air curing tobacco.  At the time of construction, somewhere between 1800-1890, sawmills were not around. These antique hand-hewn beams are the oldest form of beams from barns. A hand axe was used by early Kentuckians to create what is now considered one of the most sought after antique building material. These antique beams show the original traces of every axe cut making it very unique.

Our Process

Each mantel has gone through our thorough 5-step preservation process:

  1. Mantels are kiln dried to a moisture content between 10-12%
  2. Loose debris is removed through hours of careful wire brushing
  3. Mantels are then meticulously sanded to a stunning smooth finish
  4. Wood conditioner is applied to ensure a uniform look
  5. A environmentally-friendly finish is then applied in either a Flat, Semi, or Gloss sheen

I have many more mantels available.  We’re happy to fulfill any special requests in size, design, finishing, etc.  Mantels are available in many other species of wood also.   Please contact us if you would like a special size!
