The things that attracted me to the S5 Active were the water resistance and shock resistance. I have never drowned a phone but I have broken several screens (glass and digitizer). I am active in small bursts and use my phone when hiking etc for pics. I occasionally drop the phone (my wife calls it clumsiness) so need something rugged. The S5 Active has been great. I was able to take pictures out of a hot spring grotto in the NM Valle Caldera with some faith that if I dropped the phone it would survive. The times I have dropped the phone I have cringed but it has done well. The power button often gets bumped and blanks the screen but I guess that happens on most phones. I had a bumper case for my S3 and it saved it from breaks but added a lot to the size. The S5 Active is not too bulky but has the protection. I like the Show Open Apps button. The Active button that brings up the compass, Altitude (always 500 ft low) and location coordinates is cool and was fun to play with in Colorado. I don't like the My Magazine screen that shows when you go all the way to the left on the home screen. I find I don't look at it often enough and it is just an annoying open app when I am trying to conserve energy. I have had the phone about 6 months and it has been great.Read full review

My wife wanted an upgrade from her Samsung Galaxy S3. She didn't know why she wanted to upgrade, but she wanted a 'newer' phone. I read a lot about the S5 and S6. I went with the S5 due to the S^ lack of memory card expansion and replaceable battery. I went with the S5 active for pricing. She likes it a lot! It has the most recent version of Android, and some interesting Samsung software we're trying out. The size meets her request for bigger bit not phablet size. She's happy, I'm cool in her opinion, so all is well. I would advise that the S5 active does not allow for wireless charging due to it's case design. The standard S5 would allow you to use after market add ons to wirelessly charge, but the Active does not. It didn't impact my wife's affection for the phone.

Phone came unlocked with a new ac adapter and usb charging cord. Minor dings on the outside of the phone but not easily noticeable. No scratches on the screen. Battery was about 88% when I received it and we were in below freezing temps when it was delivered and in route for delivery. All in all its a very good value. Because it is unlocked through AT&T it did do a system update within a day of connecting it to WiFi. I have no issues with that though. I did get a heavy duty screen protector and case for those just in case moments. And I have already dropped it in the sink with water in it and it still works just fine.

I like the phones apps even though I'm still learning how to use it. So far my only complaint is the back cover. It is as thin as paper and just as pliable. It has already broken. Had to purchase a new back cover and also a hard shell to keep from breaking again. Which I didn't want and was one reason I chose the S5 Active, I thought it was more durable.
