ROMAN Danubian Horsemen Lead Plaque VERY RARE 200-300 A.D.

Thrace under Roman rule. Choice example in great condtion with light brown patina. Such plaques are typical for the Eastern Roman Empire and Thrace in particular. They are attributed to a local religion known as the Danubian Horseman Cult. There is much argument among scholars as the exact use and purpose of these plaques by so far no definitive opinon has been focused upon. Some believe that these are votive offerings and others that these are religious amulets. Either way, such plaques are very rare and highly collectible pieces. Lead was the metal of Saturn and was the choice material for religous artifacts by Thracian priests.

In the upper corners are the god of the Sun - Sol and the goddess of the Moon - Luna. The standing female deity is typically described as Helen, the two horsemen on the sides are the Dioscuri - Castor and Pollux. The central facing figure wears a long chiton and peplos and grasps the bridle of each horse. Below there are two lying figures, face down, wearing long pleated chitons.Centrally, beneath the standing figure and between the sacrificial victims, there is a sacrificial tripod,In the center above the famale deity there is an eagle. On the bottom panel are several animals, lion, scorpion, rooster etc.An amphora and other symbols.
