Matchlessantiques is offering smiths and collectors this Rebuilt 25 lb. LITTLE GIANT Power or Trip Hammer that is in EXCELLENT all ready to work condition. This Power Hammer was made by Little Giant Manufacturing Company of Mankato, Minnesota. If you haven't used a power hammer, you don't know what you are missing! See the videos of this hammer in action.
Power hammers have been used to help forge metal ever since the smith decided that he needed more capacity to forge a larger mass than he was capable of doing with his own hand. This need generated the idea of using an assistant as a striker, multiple strikers, and then the power hammer. Today, power hammers are still one of the most efficient ways to increase production and profits. Many Bladesmiths and blacksmiths find power hammers a must for saving time. Power hammers will last a long time if properly maintained.
This Power Hammer is the OLD STYLE Little Giant with the serial number H 3200. It has the wrap around style guide which are popular because they are easy to adjust and stay adjusted well. This hammer has the wood block style clutch with new maple blocks and the clutch surface has been turned. The clutch collar fits well and is not worn out. The clutch has excellent control and has a brake that works off the clutch fork lever (see video). The ram toggle link area has been welded and machined and the v - guides trued. The wrap around guide has been lined with brass. The ram dovetail has been machined to proper specs.
A brand new main crank has been installed and there are new babbitt bearings in both the main crank and clutch pulley. The pin holes in the main arms and crosshead have been welded and drilled and fitted with new standard pins. Both the T links and knuckles are new. The hammer has new top and bottom drawing dies with new die keys, a new 1 hp. 220 v. single phase motor, new pulley and new belts. The motor mount has an adjusting bolt that allows the user to keep the belts at the proper tension. Both the Clutch bolt and Treadle pins has been removed and new oversize pins installed. There are new shims in both the top bearings and wrap around guide. A new adjustable clutch rod was added including a good strong return spring. There are grease fittings for the following: main crankshaft, clutch beaing, clucth collar, foot treadle pin and clutch bolt.
The bottom dovetail has been ground flat and level and a plate installed for the new die to sit on. Both the plate and new die cover almost the whole width of the dovetail giving the die excellent support.
This hammer hits hard. You will be amazed at how fast it can move metal (see videos below). The manufacturer claims this machine can forge up to 2 inches in diameter, however if you watch the video, you can see that it draws out a 2 inch piece of round stock like it was nothing. As normal, after installing new dies, the keys will have to be checked several times and normal greasing and oiling will need to be performed with use. Proper care will insure this hammer will last a long time.
