  • You are bidding on a unique, antique destination linen from Grand Central Terminal.
  • This item could also be referred to as a "Gate curtain."  The material at the top is doubled over so it could be displayed with a curtain rod.
  • Grand Central is probably that most famous railroad station in the United States, interrupting New York City's grid of Streets between 42nd and 45th Streets in the center of Park Avenue (which is diverted around the building for those blocks).
  • This linen is extremely thick compared to most typical roll signs. 
  • It represented this special train for specific patrons only.
  • Both the black background and white letters have been painted on.
  • An example of one of these destination linens in use can be seen in photo 5.  This photo was from the cover of a 1965 issue of Trains Magazine.  That issue had a spread about the commuters of Grand Central.
  • This destination linen is painted in black.  The back feels like linen, but the front feels almost like leather. The linen is uniformly black throughout.
  • The job of this sign linen is now handled by LED message boards.
  • This item was made by Stauffer Chemicals.
  • This section measures 28 inches wide by 72 inches long.
