NEW BRITAIN CEREMONIAL PAINTED BARK PANEL

 Origin: Melanesia, New Britain, Gazelle Peninsula, Likely Tolai people  (Provenance: Tad Dale Santa Fe, New Mexico, Mike Aulisso)

Period/Date: Early to Mid 20th century

Materials:  Palm Splath/ bark

Description:  Not a lot is known about these bark panels but a number of them seem to originate out of an Australian collection in the 1980's.  It features two surrealistic spirit figures framed by a intricate geometric layered boarder.  There is some slight loss and damage to the bottom edge but it is in overall great condition. The bark is slightly curved. It is possible to make it flat (Visser, from the gallery Visser did that for a bark from the same series).

In new New Ireland, similar panels in style had been collected by Walden early XX century. They were the decoration of a taboo house reserved for women. Eight panels (live style, and highly stylized) were showing the different steps of maternity to educate the young girls.

Here, the two spirit figures resemble the New Britain Dukduk with their conical heads. Another thing to keep in mind is that the Dukduks, from the Tumbuan secret society follow the different steps of life, getting born, then behave like a child, become adult and then die. Is this panel an evocation of the Dukduk live cycle to be kept in a men’s house? There is more investigation needed. 5 years ago, there was a few very similar bark painting during the KAOS parcours du monde in Paris. All coming from Tad Dale originally.
