Antique Pre-1800 Handmade Rose of Sharon Applique Quilt with Stuffed Rose Buds
Important Museum Quality Quilt with Provinence
SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE PHOTOS
This astonishing quilt was once a part of a museum collection and from the condition of the index card documenting its provinence it looks like it was displayed a very long time ago. This beautiful Roses and Buds or Rose of Sharon quilt is rich with precious details and shows this quilters pride in craftmanship.
To start there are 16 roses in bloom with each surrounded by 7 stuffed rose buds and seperated with a fine and delicate trailing vine seperating each block. Double line oak leaves have been quilted in the ground surrounding the roses. Bordered on three sides with a ribbon and bow garland and a full binding with a tiny perfectly sewn red piping. It looks as if fabric for the piping was wrapped around a thin piece of string. The design is appliqued and then quilted in the outline at 12 - 14 stitches per inch, so the pattern shows on the reverse side as hand quilting. The applique work and hand quilting is perfectly even and beautifully accomplished by a highly skilled and patient quilter.
Overall size is 92 X 84 inches. Fabrics feel nice strong and the quilt has a substantial feel to it. Stitching is tight and intact. There is no batting. Most likely a thin blanket was used in the filling or fabric. See item details above the listing for measurements.
CONDITION: This quilt is in excellent condition. There is no evidence of wear and it appears to have never been washed. It has picked up quite a bit of dust over the past 200 years and there is spotting and discolorations. The white ground shows whiter than it really is in the photos. The actual color is an off-white or antique white from the age discoloration. See photos below for more detailed photographs of the discoloration.
No holes or tears or signs of wear. This quilt shows age discoloration in the white ground. There is spotting. There is a very slight storage odor to this quilt and it does not appear to have been exposed to insects, smoke, pets or abuse. It also appears to have had very little exposure to sunlight. It has been very well cared for over the years.
It has been carefully stored away from pets and in a smoke free clean environment.
