Howard Terpning

Quite simply, Howard Terpning is one of the most lauded painters of Western art. His awards are so numerous and he is honored with them so often, that to list them would require changing the count every few months. To name three would be to cite the highest prizes awarded to Western art: countless awards from the Cowboy Artists of America, the Hubbard Art Award for Excellence, the National Academy of Western Art’s Prix de West and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gene Autry Museum. Why such praise? Passion, compassion, devotion and respect for his subject matter, extraordinary talent in palette and brushstroke, an exceptional ability to evoke emotion both in his paintings and from those viewing them — all this and more has made Terpning the "Storyteller of the Native American."

Born in Illinois and educated at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the American Academy of Art, he first gained attention from some powerful Time and Newsweek covers. Film fans praised his movie posters for such classics as The Sound of Music, Dr. Zhivago and the re-issue of Gone with the Wind. But his love of the West and Native American traditions saw his transition to fine art. Terpning is a long-time member of the Cowboy Artists of America, which has presented him with Gold and Silver awards, "Best of Show" awards, and "Best Overall Show by a Single Artist" awards more than two dozen times. His book, The Art of Howard Terpning won the Wrangler "Outstanding Art Book" award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame.

Howard Terpning Masterwork Edition Fine Art Giclee Canvas "Prospectors Among the Blackfeet"

A New York Times article on Western art and the annual Coeur d’Alene Art Auction in 2007 had this to say about the artist: “Howard Terpning just may be the most successful living American artist you’ve never heard of.” The auctioneer Peter Stremmel concurred. “Everyone is after Terpning’s work. They see him as the next Russell or Remington,” (referring to Charles Russell and Frederic Remington, the two most famous Western art painters from the end of the 19th century). Several of Terpning’s paintings had already broken the million dollar mark and his record sale price has climbed since to $1,456,000. Additionally, it’s getting harder to find a serious art collector who doesn’t recognize his name.

“In 'Prospectors Among the Blackfeet,' Blackfeet warriors find evidence of intrusion by white men: a prospector’s gold pan and other debris carelessly left behind in a shallow stream,” says the artist. “The Blackfeet were among the most implacable in their enmity toward white trespassers, first the beaver trappers and later the prospectors. And for good reason. Blackfeet had only to look at their neighbors, the Sioux and Cheyenne, where the discovery of gold in the treaty-protected Black Hills led to the final, crushing military campaigns against them.”

37" by 29" Image Size, Giclee Canvas, edition size 110, signed by the artist

All Limited Edition prints are signed and numbered (S/N) by the artist. Limited Edition prints are restricted to a certain number. For example, if 400 prints are made from an original painting, once they’re gone, that’s it. There is no limit to the number of open edition prints of a particular painting. That’s why Limited Edition prints are more expensive — and more valuable to collectors — than "open" edition. Rare objects are more valuable.

A giclée print is created with digital printers using tiny ink jets that spray microscopic ink droplets onto a sheet of canvas, creating a lush, vibrant and textured art print that has the look of an original painting. These canvas giclées need no glass in front of the image to protect it. The giclée is typically larger in size than the limited edition print and slightly smaller than the original painting.
