This 30" diameter H.P. Hood & Sons Enamel sign is a rare find and the condition of this sign makes it rarer still.  I am told that these signs were primarily used on 20th century refrigerated rail cars, but they were also used outside local establishments that sold Hood's milk and other products.  The overall condition of the sign is quite good and it has hung inside my house for more than a decade now, and before that inside at my father-in-law's house who passed the sign down to me from his years of working at Hood's milk. I have posted a picture of this sign that was used in a commemorative calendar put together by my father-in-law for Hood's in the 1997.

I believe this sign is quite a find and a beautiful addition to any sign or advertising collection.  I've seen many other porcelain signs listed that have been left outside for decades and rust and pitting are rampant.  It is often hard in these ads to describe condition adequately, as such, I have tried to post many pictures and in different light so that you can see the condition of the sign. The standard mounting rivet holes have rust and the enamel is worn away, but in all cases the metal is still solid around the whole, however, some of the rust impinges on the lettering. There are no rust areas on the main part of the sign and there are a few very minor pits in a few spots but none that are noticeable from a few feet away.  Not surprisingly the enamel has developed a slight milky color in places -- this can be clearly seen in the first picture (with the light brown background). Don't get me wrong this is a beautiful sign, but to be fair I want bidders to know as much about its imperfections as possible.

If you are a collector or dealer in antique enamel advertising signs then you know the rarity of this sign, you will be thrilled to have this in your collection. I want this to go to a place that will recognize its history and worth, therefore, if the buyer is not satisfied upon receiving the item, notify me within 3 days and we will arrange to have the item shipped back for a full refund.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or if you would like me to take a particular picture to highlight an area of concern.
