I read the first chapter online at the Prairie Home Companion's website and immediately bid for the book on ebay. Now that I've read it, I'm not disappointed, but I am a little....well, surprised, I guess. I have read and re-read Keillor's earlier works..."Lake Wobegon Days" and "Leaving Home" and laughed throughout both volumes, sometimes to tears. I guess I was a bit taken aback that so much sex has sneaked into his later works. Now, don't get me wrong...I'm no prude, and sex is a dandy thing, but Keillor's earlier books didn't have nearly as much fornication between the covers (pardon the pun) and I thought they were actually better books. I guess the bottom line is, I KNOW he can write a warm, funny and totally readable book without all the puffing and grunting, so why put so much in now? Still, read the book, it is really good. Gets a bit flighty at the end and stretches the limits of our imagination, but still a really good read.Read full review
I live in a small town and this book reminds me so much of our own town and the people who live here. I loved the characters - they are real to life with the same everyday problems we all have. Evelyn is a wonderful character! You won't understand this until you read the book, but at her 'memorial service' I laughed so much I was crying! I don't want to give anything away so I won't explain it here. Just be sure to get this book to find out about it.
I like Garrison Keillor's brand of humor. Have several of his books and have seen him perform on stage to the delight of a sell out audience. If you like the dry humor and storytelling format which Garrison uses, you will like his books and CD's.
Being from a small town myself, Garrison Keillor takes me back to relive so much of what I remember.
I bought this book as a Christmas gift because it was requested. I know nothing about the story and cannot, therefore, review the book.
