This review covers the 47, 50, 52, and 54 degree standard sole (SS) wedges in both graphite and steel shafts. As a sweeper/slider type of wedge player, the soles are thin enough with sufficient 12 and 13 degree bounce that they are excellent wedges for hardpan, turf, heavy grass, and bunker shots. In addition to their versatility, the feel is comfortably soft and the distance control (and total full swing distance) is excellent. Good spin characteristics of not too much, nor too little. The slightly relieved sole allows them to be fanned open, and they can be closed down to hit low and running shots. They are mid- to high-trajectory clubs, but do not balloon the ball. I find the 50 thru 54 degree wedges to easily extract the ball from firm-to-mid textured sand traps. They are not designed for a digger wedge swing in mushy turf or soft sand; then you need the WS (Wide Sole) versions. The size is not compact, nor oversized. They do not take a lot of practice to become proficient at. Ping quality and manufacturing control is legendary. They can also be adjusted to flatter or more upright lie angles. Mine are 2 degrees flat lie to accommodate my Ping "purple dot" baseball swing. I have been fitted for Cleveland wedges, and own Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, Wilson, and a host of lesser company wedges, and the Pings are what are in my bag. They simply do what they are designed to do EASIER than the other wedges. Not flashy, just easy functionality. I think similar easy-to-use designs would be the Cleveland CG11 and CG14 wedges, the ancient Cleveland 797 beryllium nickel and newest 588 cavity backed designs, the Ping Eye 2+ and Zing 2 models, the Titleist DCI, Callaway X Series Jaws and Vintage, Callaway Forged+, and the old Solus cavity back wedges are all good alternatives. If you choose not to purchase "specialty" wedges, then in the full iron set category the Ping G25 W, U, and S wedges are very good "scoring" tools within the full iron set concept.Read full review
I've been looking for a set of conforming wedges to put in my bag for next season. I had a mixed set of wedges that I would game and then change out until I saw the PING Gorge wedge. I went to my local golf superstore and tried them out and absolutely fell in love. I had to have them. First time out with them, 1st hole Par 5, laid up to 80 yards, pulled out my Ping Gorge 60* SS wedge, put it 3 feet next to the pin. I chuckled to myself because even though they're conforming grooves, I still was able to stick it and have it spin back about a foot. It's as if I was using the old grooves. Next hole, par 4, had my second shot at about 125 yards, pulled out my PING Gorge 52* SS wedge (which sets up like a hitting a lofted iron, no offset, it matches up just like my PING S56 irons) put it 5 feet to the pin. I won't mention the birdie putts though, that's another conversation. But all-in-all, these wedges are amazing. A must-have!!!!Read full review
