Original Glass Plate Negative
Albert K. Smiley - Redlands, California
Photographed by H. C. Tibbitts

Vintage dry glass plate negative #56, 1909 or 1910 - very good condition; some light emulsion fading visible around the edges. Plate has no chips, cracks or other faults; overall about 6 1/2" x 8 1/2". For reference, I've shown the title and number entry in the photographer's original log book.

The overall positive and negative scans in this listing are at a low resolution; the details are shown from a higher resolution look at the image. There is no print with this negative.

Howard Clinton Tibbitts (1863-1937) was a San Francisco based photographer. Starting in 1892, he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 40 years. He photographed extensively in the American West, Canada, and Mexico, documenting landscapes, towns, industry, agriculture, parks, pubic buildings, and other local scenes to help promote Southern Pacific's passenger travel. His work was showcased in the railroad's magazine SUNSET starting with first publication in 1898.

Tibbitt’s photographs are in the collections of the University of California’s Bancroft Library, the California State Railroad Museum, the California Historical Society, and many other museums and institutions. While much of his work has been published over the years in books, periodicals, and as post card images, this negative comes from a long time privately held archive of his work from c.1905-1925.

Will be carefully packed and promptly sent worldwide to the winning bidder via Priority or First Class Mail. Auction has no reserve and no 'buy it now' option.
