I was not very knowledgeable about this character I knew of him in the most generic terms. I knew of the comic strip in the paper and I knew of the Filmation version of the Worlds Greatest Superheroes but I took a chance after seeing some nice reviews from people I felt knew what they were talking about. Facebook is a great place to learn about movies that you might have missed. Was this in the same genre of say Gone With The Wind or Casablanca? No but it doesn't have to be. It excel's for different reasons I think this is a situation where the actors and the script came together along with some very impressive camera work to make such a good film. I take my hat off for the creators having watched the original serials I was wondering just how they would be able to pull a movie from that era in the today world. I didn't have to think that way. It doesn't need a update it is perfect set in the same universe as the original serial and it works. If you can set aside your thoughts maybe on the star of the movie. I know of friends of mine who said they wouldn't watch it because of that actor. I saw him in Titanic and the character there seemed very one dimensional something that Cameron can sometimes create when working on an epic. But all that aside I still think that what this is for my collection is that it makes it more complete in the way that I want to have all the Superhero titles of the comics I was raised with and this is a welcome addition. I hope you will give it a chance. Read full review

I saw this whenever it first came out. I wanted it b/c I've always been a fan of The Phantom. Its a bit "slapstickish" in some of the fight scenes. Nevertheless, overall, I liked the movie. I wished that they'd made a sequel to it. If you're a Phantom fan; then this will be a movie you'll want for your DVD collection. The cinematography was really nice & some of the stunts were nailbiters! The Phantom is not a typical "superhero", so maybe thats why there was only one. This is THE ORIGINAL FILM. There's another film out there w/same title. So, be sure you get the one w/Billy Zane as The Phantom if you decide to add this to your DVD collection. Catherine Zeta-Jones is in this movie too, in case you guys are fans of hers too. Its sort of in line w/Zorro in some ways. Its an enjoyable film.
We had this on VHS for such a long time the video was starting to fade(to black). The Phantom skull was passed down from father to son for over 400 years. Kit(Billy Zane) grew up in the 'Skull Cave' but was schooled in the USA. When his father was murdered he had to take over the family traditions. Per chance, Treat Williams[the bad guy] had found two of the magical skulls and was looking for the third(which had been misplaced in the wrong era of a museum) to give him 'TOTAL POWER!' Kit got wind of this and high tailed it back to New York to retrieve(hopefully all)the skulls. Enter his college female friend Kristy Swanson(the daughter of the leading newspaper publisher)where after the museum breakin/a romp on horseback through the town/jumps into the icy water to hang onto the pontoon of the airship(Kathern-Zeta Jones pilots)which happens to be back to the Skull cave of Kit. The story is so comic book action that as a avid reader you really can't stop this film for the fist time. After that if you needed to take a dinner break then make the dinner but get back to the show! Best of Billy Zane in this kind of action. I've read there a a couple of sequels but haven't put a finger on then just yet. Happy viewing. -K-Read full review
"The Phantom" is high-octane family entertainment at it's best, a fun movie to watch over and over again! Others may not agree, but as far as I'm concerned, this is Billy Zane's best character of all the movies I've seen him in! He's the perfect fit, making one of my comic book favorites come to life! Treat Williams is great as the "smooth" bad guy, and some of the island scenes are breath-taking! The action is non-stop and there's just enough romance without being mushy. If you're an "Indiana Jones" fan, you'll enjoy "The Phantom" with it's similar style! In an age when clean family entertainment is hard to find, "The Phantom" is just the right recipe!
I love this movie Billy Zane is amazing star
