Don't let my title fool you. I am not bashing The Johnny Cash-Rick Rubin series of albums. All of them are fabulous, and I own every one. But for as much as Rick Rubin has been given credit, Cash was on to something in the early seventies. I read an interview that when Rick Rubin came to him with the idea for American Recordings, Cash told him that he recorded a similarly styled album, and the record companies didn't want it. He continued to record it anyway, for his "Personal File". Cash chose songs just like he and Rubin did for American Recordings. Some he wrote, others were just songs that he loved or conveyed a certain message. The terrific thing about Personal File is that the bulk of it was recorded in the 70's, and his voice is perfect. Unlike some later albums with Rubin, when his voice started to waver a bit, all the songs included in the "Personal File" sound like they should. Bold. Powerful. You name it, it is Cash at his finest. Cash also recorded a bit of the story for many of the songs, and it sounds like you are sitting in the studio with him. I consider it a must own.Read full review
Personal File by Johnny Cash is just that...A Personal File filled with 49 previously unreleased gems that Johnny kept for his own pleasure. Johnny's son, John Carter Cash found them hidden in his daddy's recording studio at the House of Cash estate in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Thank God John had the good sense to share them by getting them recorded on this incredible CD collection. Personal File is a MUST have for all Johnny Cash fans. I am a huge fan of the man in black...I grew up listening to my daddy playing Johnny Cash music all the time; in fact, my daddy still listens to Johnny today. What is unique about Personal File is that it's just Johnny Cash singing and strumming on his guitar in his own inimitable style...nothing more, nothing less. That and Johnny telling some tales about some of the songs before he sings 'em...he even recites a poem, "The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert W. Service. On Disc One, he sings his heart out with songs that have the familiar flavor of oft told tales passed from generation to generation with Johnny singing like he's singing for an audience of one...ME! On Disc Two, Johnny keeps on singing like he's singing for an audience of one, but this time Johnny sings songs that show his deep love for Jesus Christ. The listener knows for sure that Johnny knows that when his journey on Earth is done, that he's gonna end up in Heaven, taking it "A Half a Mile A Day", which is one of the tunes that Johnny introduces on Disc Two with a story that comes from deep in Johnny's soul and that delivers a chill tingling one's spine. Since many of the songs on this CD were recorded in 1973, it seems a bit surreal knowing that Johnny Cash's journey on Earth is already done and that he's already up there in Heaven singing and strumming his heart out. Thank you John Carter Cash for sharing your daddy's Personal File. Thank you, Johnny...I'll be seeing you when my journey's done and I am looking forward to hearing you sing in Heaven. In the meantime, I think I'll put your Personal File in the CD player right now and give it a listen.Read full review

A very different type of CD. It's what Johnny would play when he was alone, for fun. It's just his voice and an accoustic guitar. Awesome!
