22nd Annual Report
of the Bureau of American Ethnology
to the Secretary of the
Smithsonian Institution,
1900-1901; Part Two:
The Hako: A Pawnee Ceremony,

Alice C. Fletcher

Published by the Government Printing Office, Washington, 1904. Very scarce, first edition. This is the second volume of this report, and contains a complete original book-length work titled  'The Hako, a Pawnee Ceremony,' written by Alice C. Fletcher (assisted by James R. Murie; music transcribed by Edwin S. Tracy). 372 pages, with index.

It is an excellent study of ceremonial rituals and implements of the Pawnee Indians, including music and lyrics; beautifully illustrated with 8 full-page color lithograph illustrations of Pawnee Indians, costumes and artifacts used during the ceremony, a b&w photo portrait of James R. Murie, 11 diagrams of lodges and dances, and transcriptions of music, words and chants used during the ceremonies, with English translations. Includes detailed descriptions of a total of twenty distinct  Pawnee rituals that are part of the Hako ceremony.

The 8 color plates include: The Ku'rahus in Ceremonial Dress (front and profile views), "Kawas" - the brown feathered stem (female), the white feathered stem (male), Mother Corn, the rattles, the wildcat skin and crotched stick, and the feather symbol of Tira'wa.

Hardcover, 8 by 11.5 inches, cover embossed with gold portrait of a Native American; some moderate rubbing to corners and spine extremities, minor corner bumping, several minor cover scuffs, small wrinkle and a sticker to the spine cloth; interior front hinge has a tight crack - it shows the binding cords but is still strong and well-attached; one-inch edge tear to the second title page; a few pages have s minor thumb-smudge in the margin; ex-libris, with ink stamp to fore-edge, ink stamp and stickers to endpapers, ink stamp and impression stamp to title page - otherwise clean and bright throughout; the color plates are stunning; one is starting to pull free. Condition is Good+
