PRXB Exhaust Brakes
Diesel engines, unlike gasoline engines, don't slow down simply by taking your foot off the accelerator; they rely on service and supplemental brakes. An exhaust brake is a form of a supplemental brake, and they work much differently than their conventional counterparts.
Introducing the Pacbrake PRXB
Pacbrake’s flagship product, the PRXB (pressure regulated exhaust brake), is the unquestioned leader in the supplemental brake industry. The patented PRXB design delivers the strongest braking horsepower, greatest speed reductions and shortest stopping distances possible without the use of service brakes. It maintains optimum retarding performance by maximizing the exhaust backpressure throughout the entire RPM range. Unlike a typical exhaust brake, which requires high RPMs to work properly, the PRXB delivers constant exhaust pressure (braking) as early as 1200 RPM through to the maximum allowable RPM.
Controlled by a master ON/OFF switch, Pacbrake’s exhaust brakes provide whisper quiet supplemental braking that allows service brakes to be used much less, ultimately saving you money. They have the ability to be left on all the time, making it ideal for in-city driving or for steep, downhill grades. This product pays for itself as less wear on the brake pads means fewer brake jobs.
PRXB Exhaust Brakes: Specifics
PRXB Exhaust Brakes: Mechanics
With over a quarter of a million exhaust brakes manufactured and sold, Pacbrake has mastered quality product development. Being home to the only exhaust brake on the market with a true variable orifice, remarkable constant backpressure and strongest braking horsepower, Pacbrake has revolutionized modern day exhaust braking with its patented design of the PRXB.
WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE PRXB?
In order to have consistent and effective braking over the entire RPM range, it is important (and necessary) to maintain constant backpressure. To achieve this, Pacbrake’s patented design has incorporated an additional waste gate on the butterfly valve to regulate the amount of exhaust flow that is being passed through. The flow is controlled by a spring-loaded arm, whose pressure rating and location are key factors in the functionality of the PRXB. Located outside of the housing and away from the heat, the spring is able to maintain its strength and durability for years of proper and precise braking performance.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
CREATING & MAINTAINING BACKPRESSURE
Backpressure is created by exhaust flow entering the housing, hitting the closed butterfly valve and being forced back out in the direction it came. It is maintained by the pressure-controlled spring that is located on the outside of the exhaust brake housing.
PREMIUM BRAKING PERFORMANCE
As the engine’s RPM increase, the spring compresses and the arm moves away from the butterfly valve, therefore releasing more exhaust flow through the orifice. As the RPMs decrease, the spring releases and the arm applies pressure back onto the plate, covering the hole, and ultimately releasing a smaller amount of exhaust flow.
There is less than a 10% change in backpressure over the entire RPM range on the PRXB
PRXB Exhaust Brakes: PRXB To The Test
Two trucks, one equipped with a PRXB exhaust brake and the other with our competitors exhaust brake, are traveling down a 5% grade. Both vehicles start descending at the same time while traveling at a speed of 45 MPH. With a sharp corner ahead, both vehicles activate their exhaust brake...
RESULTS AFTER 60 SECONDS
The truck equipped with the PRXB slowed to a safe cornering speed (18 MPH) in just under 1/2 mile. In that same amount of time, the truck equipped with our competitors exhaust brake traveled 450 ft MORE and was still moving at a dangerous 30 MPH. Did this truck slow down in time?
Tow/Haul Mode vs. PRXB Exhaust Brake
As the graph comparison below shows, selecting the Allison transmission’s tow/haul mode when reducing speed provides approximately 150 retarding horsepower. In the same mode, with the addition of a Pacbrake PRXB, the retarding ability is almost doubled, providing the most effective speed reduction possible without the need for service brakes. Allison transmissions will automatically downshift to attain higher RPM to aid in retarding, but with a Pacbrake PRXB, higher RPM is not as critical due to the unique modulation design.
PRXB Exhaust Brakes: Our Kits
Everything Is Included
Pacbrake likes to keep things simple for their customers. From your first one-on-one conversation with our sales experts to the final product, we provide a total package of quality service and parts. There are a number of components required to operate an exhaust brake, but we conveniently include everything you need in our exhaust brake kits. Check out the information below to learn what is included in our kits.
AIR COMPRESSOR, TANK & CURLY HOSE
Every exhaust brake requires an air compressor and air tank to operate. Often mounted under the hood, Pacbrake’s air compressor builds up pressure in the air tank that is released during braking.
Pacbrake’s ½ gallon air tank works with the exhaust brake and air compressor to speed up the exhaust brake cylinder activation. It does this by storing air pressure (created by the compressor) and holding it until needed. Outside the air tank there is a 135 PSI pressure switch that controls the amount of air pressure contained inside. As the pressure drops a signal is sent to the compressor to create more air, thereby filling the tank back to its full capacity.
Generally frame mounted, this onboard air tank also provides an air source for operating air horns and air springs (as well as any other air-operated accessories your vehicle may have). PLEASE NOTE: If you are operating more than one air operated product and prefer a larger air tank and/or compressor, upgrades are available.
A 25ft curly hose with an assortment of accessories is also included and easily stored in a heavy duty nylon bag. Just attach the curly hose to the quick disconnect chuck off of the air compressor (your external air source) and you’re able to perform a variety of jobs including:
- Filling tires and checking air pressure
- Inflating air mattresses, footballs, beach toys etc.
- Blowing air (for cleaning, dusting, quick removal of debris)
EXHAUST BRAKE & TRANSMISSION CONTROLLERS
Most of our exhaust brake kits come with a controller. This small device is responsible for engaging the vehicle’s exhaust brake by monitoring the following settings: engine speed, vehicle speed and throttle position. It reads the vehicle’s data and analyzes the results to decide what actions must be taken. If your brake kit didn’t come with a controller kit it simply means your vehicle doesn’t need it.
Pacbrake has two types of controllers, one that is strictly an exhaust brake controller as outlined above, and the other is combination brake controller and transmission controller. This dual control is designed for vehicles with automatic transmissions to improve the functionality of the exhaust brake. It does this by taking control of the torque converter solenoid to modulate the pressure that the torque converter sees. Essentially, it forces the clutch to disengage in the torque converter and puts the vehicle into full lock-up, resulting in less slippage and smoother exhaust brake activation.
EXHAUST BRAKE ADAPTERS
When it comes to installing an exhaust brake on your diesel vehicle there are two different mounting configurations. Shown below is an example of the most typical exhaust brake installation - the inline mount. For this type of install adapters are required to seal the airflow from the exhaust brake to the exhaust pipe. They are mounted on either side of the brake and clamped into place.
Dodge 2003 and newer vehicles are the exceptions, as they are installed using a direct mount configuration. This type of install does not require adapters as one side of the brake attaches directly to the turbocharger and the other side directly to the exhaust pipe.
Pacbrake’s exhaust brake adapters are stainless steel and have machined flanges so that they are perfectly matched when connected to the exhaust brake housing. This, as well as the stainless steel V-Clamps, ensures that there is a perfect airtight seal made between all exhaust brake joints.
CAUTION: All vehicles with exhaust system upgrades will be required to use an adapter that fits precisely with the current exhaust pipe size and brake. Please inform me about any exhaust system upgrades when ordering an exhaust brake.
PRXB Exhaust Brakes: Optional Additions
Extend the life of your exhaust brake with Pacbrake’s Superlube, a multi-purpose, heat resistant, synthetic lubricant that penetrates and protects your exhaust brake. Using Superlube on your exhaust brake reduces friction and wear, helps prevent rust and corrosion and protects against binding or sticking. This high quality lubricant can also be used for household, hobby, fishing, marine, hunting and automotive applications.
With the engine off, apply a sufficient amount (4-5 drops) to the highlighted locations shown on the above diagram. Once all the points have been lubricated, cycle the exhaust brake manually or electronically a few times to work the lubricant in. These steps will ensure that the Pacbrake continues to function properly.
Designed specially for manual transmission vehicles, Pacbrake’s SwitchPac is a shifter-mounted ON/OFF switch. The convenient fingertip control location provides easy access for exhaust brake activation. The SwitchPac can operate not only your vehicle's exhaust brake, but other vehicle accessories such as Pacbrake's air horns.
PACBRAKE'S ECM BYPASS SWITCH
Vehicles with an engine ECU (electronic control unit) experience a 2½ second delay when activating their exhaust brake circuit. Pacbrake’s ECM Bypass kit eliminates this delay with bypassing the computer system using a mechanical throttle switch mounted on the accelerator linkage.
Pacbrake's Maximum Exhaust Flow Design
'94-'02 Dodge Ram Trucks w/ 5.9L Cummins Diesel Engines
This 4" PRXB Exhaust Brake is designed with a unique cast housing specifically for 1994-2002 Dodge Ram trucks (equipped with 5.9L Cummins diesel engines and HX/HY35 turbos).
Integrated with the patented PRXB design for the most braking horsepower at low engine RPM's, this brake is engineered to reduce the use of your service brakes while maximizing the exhaust flow.
The 'maximum exhaust flow design' allows waste gate gases to escape the engine faster and spool the turbocharger faster to decrease turbo lag. In turn, this increases horsepower and torque while lowering EGTs (exhaust gas tempatures).
The brake's 5 bolt flange bolts directly to the turbocharger outlet (Directmount™ design) eliminating the restrictive factory flange. Exhaust pipe adapters are available to fit factory and all larger aftermarket exhaust systems.
Pacbrake Max Flow: The Name Says It All
It's Obvious That The Pacbrake Design Will Reduce EGT's Over Stock Dodge & All Competitor's Versions
