I must admit that I have just received a used unit which is about a year old. I was worried that it would not function or be quirky ... to the contrary. Though the unit is older, it had better reviews than the newer model ... why I do not know. I have used several DVDs and CDs in it so far and the video quality in 1080p upconverting is considerably sharper and crisper than normal DVD mode. In fact the 2x zoom mode in 1080p is about the same quality as standard 480i, which is a good way to fill my entire LG 37" LCD screen. In non-zoom 1080p mode the widescreen image is very clear and sharp. Though I am sure that bluray is sharper, I do not feel it has greater emotional impact ... strictly a discussion for videophiles or for people with 65" screens. It plays many difference video and audio formats, but I have not tested those yet. The standard discs tried so far have not skipped or hesitated, whether they were old or new or from the rental fleet (notoriously problematic). The sound quality on DVDs and CDs using AV cables through an older analog Harmon Kardon amplifier and JBL speakers is satisfying. I have not yet heard it using a digital cable through my newer Denon amp and NHT speakers, though I expect it will be excellent by comparison. Honestly, I have excellent eyesight and exceptional hearing, and though I can see and hear the difference in high grade equipment compared to a less expensive unit like this, I would suggest that this unit delivers at least 90% of the reproduction quality of a higher grade $500+ unit (I paid $45). Depending on seeing and hearing acuity, I suspect the average person would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Frankly, in the movie theater, while the sound systems are superb, I have noticed that the giant screen is often grainy and blurry... much, much more so than this unit delivers. I for one am glad to save the money by buying this unit and escaping technology overkill.Read full review
This is my second DVD player used primarily for watching DivX content. The best feature about it, is the USB drive that will read JPEG, MP3 and AVI files off of anything formatted in FAT32. Any flash memory, external hard drives, you name it. Just stick it in the USB and play your movies off of it. VERY HANDY in my opinion. This is compatible with all DivX formats and many other standard video formats. I have used it extensively and have not found anything it would not be able to play yet. Fast Forwards and Rewindes in up to x32 on AVI files (which i know a lot of other players do not). This particular model is USB1.1. Meaning it will read from 1.1 or 2.0 device, but will only use 1.1 speed. This HAS NOT caused any delays or pauses in watching for me. The only significantly annoying feature I found is the fact that if you leave the movie Paused for longer than a few minutes the player turns off and you lose your spot. You will have to fast forward from the beginning. Otherwise, greately recommended for those who watch a lot of DivX content and don't want to burn DVDs.Read full review
This is a wonderful DVD player with 1080p up sampling which doesn't look awful. It's also one of the few DVD players available with a simple means to set as region 0 with transcoding. This means you can watch a DVD from any region on virtually any television. It features RCA and HDMI so it functions with modern hardware despite being 15 years old. Of course it supports cds, and the DivX format. I'm not sure which revision of WMA it works with as that is no longer popular.

I was generally happy with this player, once I had figured out how to set it to region 0. I only used the HDMI output. The quality of the upscaled image was ok (not as good as when I let the Pioneer receiver do the upscaling). This morning I found the player with a DVD in the open tray, and it would not power up. I could not get either of the kids to admit to being the last person who used it, so I don't know what exactly happened. I opened it, checked the fuse, and checked that the DSP board had power, which was the case. The transformer warmed up a bit when connected to power. But the display remained dark, and no matter what I tried, it would not respond to any buttons. Given that some people are selling the unit "as is" here on Ebay with what seems to be the same issue, I would caution the prospective buyer of a potential reliability issue with this model. This is not a trivial problem to fix, and without the proper equipment and lots of dedication, it is not worth the time. I will buy another one, however, because I can't really expect more for the price of 2 DVDs. 6-year update: We don't use this player much as I keep all my content on the NAS, but when we do, it still works.Read full review
Love the flexibility and clarity of the player. it was an excellent value for the money and loved the fact that I could plug in my USB drive and view movies off it or my pictures. Some minor quirks: 1. For slideshows, I cannot set the speed of the slideshow and it is quite slow. 2. If a folder has a lot of pictures, then it playes properly in the slideshow, but if you try to move thru them manually - it gets stuck and you have to get out of the folder and come back. But these are minor issues, go ahead and buy this if you get an opportunity.
