Original Indian War, Custer period, model 1872 cavalry hat insignia for enlistedmen. Medium patina, a couple of small dark spots. Loops good.
These are from the grouping that surfaced about twenty years ago from a collector who ran a private museum in the Lancaster, PA, area and had also bought military belt plates and insignia in quantity in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s from H.K. White and other prominent surplus dealers of the era. This is the same source for most of the original Civil War infantry insignia now on the market. While he did not have cavalry insignia from the Civil War, he did have a quantity of the 1872 pattern. Just about all the originals you see in the hands of any dealer are from this same group. They were rare before the group was found, seemed common for some time afterward, and are now becoming rare again. These are original period insignia, not reproductions. Just about all from this group were unissued surplus. They are regulation and measure 2 1/2 inches wide and are stamped brass with four brass loops soldered to the reverse. These would be pushed through the fabric of the hat or cap and secured on the reverse with leather wedges. This style of replaced the earlier Civil War pattern that was a bit larger. I show a vignette from a period photo showing a Indian War cavalryman wearing one of this on a campaign hat. What you see is what you get.
