Orig 1919 Antique Pastel Colorful Landscape Painting Walter Van Den Hengel
Original Label From 1919 Art Exhibition On Back SIGNED

At the end of February we went to a HUGE university/private collection/museum deaccession sale. (That is where museums, universities and private collectors quietly dispose of items that they have had in their archives to make room for more or to raise money.) Over the next few weeks we are going to list the items from that sale. They came from anonymous sources, they don't like folks knowing when they are having items leave their collection. We will post this paragraph with the items that come from that sale. Check out all the amazing items.

Up in this auction is a fantastic pastel colorful landscape painting by listed artist, Walter Van Den Hengel (1877-1941). On the back it has its original label from the 1919 Seventeenth Annual Philadelphia Watercolor Exhibition. On the label the painting is titled, "Decorative Landscape". Bright colors, it depicts what looks like two people working in a garden beside a house and two red barns or outbuildings. Signed in the painting in the bottom right corner, Walter V/D Hengel. It measures approx. 20 1/2" x 16 1/2", in a more contemporary matting and framing approx. 28 3/8" x 24 3/8". We found the following bio on Van Den Hengel on AskArt:

Walter Van Den Hengel (1877 - 1941)
Lived/Active: Pennsylvania Known for: figure, genre, landscape

Walter van den Hengel was born on Christmas Day 1877 in Utrecht, Holland. During his youth, he trained as a nurseryman with a formal apprenticeship in the Horties-Botannical Gardens in Amsterdam. His next few years were spent in England and Holland working at his craft.

Walter immigrated to America by way of Canada about 1909 and secured a job in Georgia. From there he went to the firm of Blackstone, Inc. in Washington, D.C. as a decorator designer. Here he became friendly with a German-American landscape artist Max Weyl. The two men worked together often, and Weyl encouraged Walter to take his painting seriously and give it his full time. Walter by this time had a family to support, but continued to paint and draw in every spare minute.

The Philadelphia firm of J. J. Habermehl and Sons heard of Walter’s work and hired as their head floral designer. By 1918, Walter opened his own retail flower shop in Overbrook, later expanding the business to several more locations. With a fine reputation, he was commissioned to be the designer of the Glendenning rock garden in Fairmount Park, a well-publicized WPA project of the 1930's. Walter also became a frequent exhibitor at the Philadelphia Flower show, with his designs and artistry drawing critical acclaim.

He managed to paint and take art courses at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, primarily at the Summer Classes offered in Chester Springs, PA. His teachers included Daniel Garber and Joseph T. Pearson, Jr.. The Philadelphia artist Fred Wagner noted in a clipping of the time -. - . "Walter van den Hengel is among the strongest showing and among his several exhibits is a huge landscape entitled 'Pickering Valley' which is promising of some original and important results." He exhibited at the Academy art shows in 1917-18-19 and 1925, 1929 and 1935.

His colors are bold and very reminiscent of other members of the Pennsylvania School; his landscapes reveal his impression of the unique warmth of the Chester County countryside.

During the early 1930's, he moved near Valley Forge, PA. It was the Van den Hengel farmhouse, barn and a particularly attractive springhouse that are the subject matter of many of his pastels and oils. His friendships included Frederick Harer, the framemaker, from whom Walter purchased several frames. He also painted a number of works in the vicinity of his shop in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia.

His mediums were oil, pastel or watercolor. In 1941, Walter van den Hengel died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 63.

Examples of his work can be found at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Woodmere Art Museum, both in Philadelphia.

TERMS OF SERVICE

EBAY is ALL we do for a living, husband and wife (Norb & Marie) working together, while we home school our kids on our farmette in Rural Delmarva. We have worked very hard to build our little business and it is very important to us. We try and do business the old fashioned way and have a rather simple outlook.

Treat all of your customers as if they are family.

Be courteous, answer emails, be fair in all your deallings and try and make friends of each and every customer.

BUT... with eBay's new star rating and the rate increases in the U.S. Postal rates we needed to define and explain our methods of business.

ONE - Who We Deal With
We sell and ship world wide to anywhere, so please email us for a quote to wherever you happen to be.

TWO - Shipping Charges
We charge shipping based on the USPS system, we will sometimes ship via courier if we can get it to you within the same time frame or faster. We add a reasonable cost for materials, normally that is $2.00 for regular sized packages. For small flat items $1.00. That covers the expense of boxes, envelopes, bubble wrap, peanuts, (We only use new packing materials, life is too short to scrounge through dumpsters). For larger items that take a larger more expensive box, we charge a little more, to cover the special box, example paintings or lamps. For oversized items or items that will take special attention to package, (Build a crate, wrap a zillion things individually, etc.), we ask you to email us for a quote on shipping prior to the auction ending. If you do not, we charge the same amount as if you did. In other words WE NEVER GOUGE SHIPPING COSTS!!

TWO POINT ONE - International Shipping
We charge shipping based on the USPS international system. The rates follow the same guidelines as number two above, though for international customers we add an additional $1.00 to cover the extra paperwork involved in international shipping. If an amount goes over $50 in value we will only ship it with Priority or Express Mail, regardless how small an item. That allows for us to have international tracking. There is no tracking available on First Class Mail.

TWO POINT TWO - Insurance
eBay's policies no longer allows us to charge the client for insurance. But... we still apply insurance to any item that goes over $27.00 in value. We reserve the right to use the insurance carrier of our choice. Sometimes that is Postal or the Carrier's Insurance and sometimes that is a private insurance company such as DSI or U-PIC/Shipsurance. If we use a private insurance company the package will not be marked insured, but it will be.

THREE - Methods of Payment Accepted
We abide by eBay's rules and try and stay abreast of their changes. We accept Paypal. Paypal also accepts the major credit cards, or we also take Credit Cards Directly over the phone, (MC, VISA, DISCOVER, AMERICAN EXPRESS, CARTE BLANCHE, DINERS CLUB, JCB) Bottom line, whatever method is most convenient for you.

FOUR - Time Frame To Pay
We ask all auctions to be paid for in the fastest possible time frame. (This is all we do for a living and we need the money to pay the bills and buy more unique and fun items to put up on eBay)

FIVE - Shipping Time Frame
We make every effort to ship in a timely manner. We are home schooling the boys, listing tons of items, and as like any of us are just plain swamped, so we have to schedule a special time to pack and ship. We ship on a first paid, first shipped basis. (We do not ship any item until it has been paid and the funds have cleared.) With the ebb and flow of payments we manage to get everything out of the door within one week. If there is a rush, we will make every effort to work with you in getting it out of the door faster. As you can see from our feedback, we do not disappoint. OF COURSE, items that need special attention, crating, etc adds to the time frame of those items.

SIX - Communication
Please feel free to contact us at anytime, with any question or comment. Unless we are out of town we make an effort to answer all emails as quickly as possible.

We PREFER PAYPAL!! We accept MC, Visa, and Discover via phone or dual e-mail or via PAYPAL!!
TO PAY WITH AMEX (American Express) PLEASE GO TO PAYPAL, THEY WILL TAKE IT FOR US!

YES, BUYER PAYS SHIPPING DESPITE WHAT EBAY'S PAGE SAYS BENEATH THIS DESCRIPTION.

We estimate shipping weight & packaging materials
and e-mail winning bidder shipping costs at auction end.
We package well, as our feedback attests.
We use NEW boxes and shipping materials, bubbles, peanuts & envelopes.
To get an estimate to your zipcode, e-mail us for a quote BEFORE the auction is over.

One last note: Thank you!! Because you have taken enough interest to read all the way down this far, we know you to be the type of customer we want to acknowledge. We continue to have so much fun on ebay mainly because of friends like you. So. . . THANK YOU!! yqz
