Here’s one you don’t see very often. A 1941 Philco model 41-231T. Only 5,000 of these ‘Bullet’ nicknamed sets were produced and this one is a fine example. It features a stunning walnut cabinet, extreme Art Deco design, pushbutton tuning, attractive dial, loop antenna and great performance on the AM broadcast and shortwave bands.
Cabinet: The walnut cabinet is just stunning. A sweeping curved left side resembles the streamline design of a bullet, thus the nickname. Beautiful wood grain flows throughout the set with an eye catching tiger stripe grain on the base. The recessed face is a unique touch which houses the dial, knobs, wood grill, and pushbuttons. Dark walnut tones and jet black trim finish the cabinet off perfectly. You’ll be the envy of all with this Art Deco beauty proudly displayed in any room of your home or office.
The Cabinet’s Finish: All of our radio cabinets undergo a vigorous restoration process. Our goal is to maintain the natural beauty of the wood and grain, while providing a deep luster and shine. We achieve this by using a minimum 12 coats of Mohawk brand lacquers and toners. We use a nitrocellulose piano lacquer which is applied through a professional HVLP turbine spray system in a climate controlled room. Nitrocellulose lacquer is very thin. We also apply very thin coats. This allows the lacquer to seep into the grain and not cover it up. A 1000, 2000, & 4000 grit wet sanding follows every third coat. The cabinet is finished off with a three step polishing process ending with an Oz glaze rub. Many hours of work are put into these radios, but as you can see, the final outcome is a beautiful, natural looking cabinet with gorgeous luster & shine. Our radios are a great piece of history that come to you ready to proudly display, as well as listen to, in any room of the home or office.
Dial/Knobs: The lighted square dial is a real looker. It features an array of colors from red to gold to ivory with different country names listed in the shortwave section of the dial. An airplane style pointer is positioned right in the center. All numbers and letters indicating station frequencies are legible and show little signs of wear. All three bullet style knobs are perfect and work as follows; volume, tuning, and band switch. All pushbuttons are fully functional with the on/off switch being the first pushbutton. It is recommended however that you use the manual tuning knob due to the age and delicacy of the pushbutton tuning mechanism. All pushbuttons are housed in an elegant gold escutcheon with the original call letters.
Electronics/Chassis: The 6 tube chassis has been electronically restored and plays great. All caps, filters, and resistors have been checked and replaced as needed. All tubes have been tested and brittle wires replaced. The chassis has been cleaned, lubed and re-aligned for optimal performance. I‘m able to pick up many stations on the AM broadcast and shortwave bands with plenty of volume and good tone using just the loop antenna.
