Brothers Joel Cohen and Ethan Cohen have always been remarkable filmmakers. Their sense of style and production are second to none. Of all of their film achievements, none stand so strongly as that of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". This unique vision of storytelling, based on Homer's Odyssey, is a real movie delight in every way. I thoroughly enjoyed watching George Clooney's Golden Globe winning role as Everett. He has never been better than right here. John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson also shine as Pete and Delmar, 2 other escaped convicts shackled with Clooney in search of buried treasure. The supporting cast is a film producer's dream. Holly Hunter is superb as Penny, Everett's ex-wife; Charles Durning is brilliant as ever in the role of Governor Pappy O'Daniel; Michael Badalucco is a comic genius in his turn as George 'Baby Face' Nelson; Chris Thomas King brings a breath of frsh air as Tommy; and John Goodman plays Big Dan Teague to the hilt. Set during the depression in Mississippi, the story carries into one situation after another with every scene played to perfection. The music on the soundtrack perfectly sets the tone for the entire film. The soundtrack recording was quite deserving of its Grammy win for Album of the Year. And George Clooney so richly deserved his Golden Globe award for Best Actor (Comedy Or Musical). Everyone should experience this contemporary classic movie.Read full review
If you are looking for a hilarious movie; you've found it. This movie has to be one of the best movies ever made. The movie goes back to the depression era. The movie is all about three escaped convicts (Everett, Pete, and Delmar) with nothing to lose and alot to gain. Their adventures through the barren landscape includes run-ins with a blind prophet, a trio of sexy Sirens, a so called Bible-salesman, as well as other stuff from Southern folklore and pop-culture including a young blues musician, the Klan, and bank robber Baby Face Nelson. This movie is a must see. Definitely one of the best movies ever made, and the more you watch it the funnier it gets. Would Definitely recommend for everyone!
"O Brother Where Art Thou" is an inspired retelling of Homer's classic "The Odyssey" set in depression era Mississippi. The scenery, dialogue, and humor are easily among the Coen Brothers best, with the frenetic pace of "Raising Arizona" rolled through gobs of nostalgia and Southern mythology. It is also a very, very funny movie that you will want to see more than once.
One of the best movies of all time in our household. A great movie to show the kids about life in a time and place as well as to introduce James Joyce, etc. The soundtrack is definitely one to keep in your car for long trips. A ten on a scale of one to five.
Even though I a city girl,I enjoyed the hillarious situations this trio got into!My father was a Southern Baptist Preacher-we never listen to "Gospel"music when I was growing up but I enjoyed the singing.I bought this for my ex husband who is dying --he grew up country & had told me he wanted this VHS tape.
