This is the first piece of the Novato meteorite for sale. It is a slice off the original meteorite found by Brien Cook on 10/22/2012 in Novato. To date this slice comes from the largest known mass (65.9 grams) and is only the second meteorite found in a week. It is an ordinary Chondrite that has yet to be classified. That should be taking place shortly. The meteorite was witnessed by hundreds of locals throughout the bay area on October 17, at around 7:45 pm. It was believed to have broken up over the Mill Valley area. So far the two finds to date have been recovered in Novato. The slice itself shows dark and light areas with metal flecks. You can see veins on both sides. There is some fusion crust on the edges. One side was cut fairly smooth, the other side is a little rough at one end. It is 30.28 mm long by 24.87 mm wide and 2.65 mm thick at the thinnest point. The total weight is 6.6 grams. |
