It weighs a ton, but what else would you expect with all of the fast glass and tough build of this lens. For an old lens, it still produces great pictures (again, what else would you expect). On an DX camera, you have the equivalent of a 450mm lens (eliminating the need of a teleconverter unless you need even more reach). VR would be nice, especially when shooting moving objects at a distance (after all you get this lens for shooting objects at a distance), because it weighs a ton and should be used on a tripod with a remote to avoid any shake that could affect the quality of your picture. Other than that, I have no complaints about this lens and would highly recommend it to any one thinking about getting a lens of this focal length
Big and heavy, but I get great images from this lens. No VR, but with today's high ISO bodies it's easy to shoot with fast enough shutter speeds to hand hold this lens. But again, it's HEAVY! So if you can support it on a mono pod during a long gig even better... Built to take heavy use and the fast 2.8 make this a great lens for somebody wanting a Pro 300 for not a lot of dough compared to the new VR models.

Compatible with modern nikons this is a great Value for a 300mm F2.8. Excellent condition examples are priced around $1500 for what is now a $5000 lens. There is no image stabilization, but who needs image stabilization with a fast lens like this. Also, it’s one less thing to worry about when buying a 20 year old lens. Shockingly light so it can be handheld. 52mm dear filters make it inexpensive and easy to use them.

Lens arrived in good shape as expected for a used lens. Appears to be fully functional. Only missing a manual which does not seem to be available any longer from Nikon. AF works well with a Promaster Spectrum 7 2X televonverter.

Nikon lenses are renown for being durable and sharp; this lens also is very fast focusing. I have owned Nikon lenses since 1995 and wouldn't think of purchasing any other brand.
