This is a camera I would recommend to someone who has a novice interest in film photography, and also has small hands.  It is a competent 35mm auto focus Nikon, and is quite small and light.  It is simple and easy to navigate, and the auto focus and 5-segment matrix metering is relatively sophisticated.  It offers portrait; close-up; landscape; sports; and night Vari-Programs on an easy to use dial to provide quick situational shooting.  It also has aperture priority; shutter priority; manual;  and programmable auto-multi exposure modes.  The auto-advance film transport is 1.5 frames per second, speedy for this class of camera.  Film speed is automatically detected and dialed into the program when you load the camera.  There is a function to allow double-exposure.  The pop-up speedlight has matrix balanced fill-flash for reducing shadows and balancing front and rear illumination in bright sunlight.  The flash sync is 1/90th of a second.  It has a hot shoe for external flash, but only the integrated flash has TTL.  A self-timer is built in, but a cable-release socket was not provided. This camera will operate in manual mode with most manual focus Nikkor lenses, though some metering will not be functional.  Nikkor AF-S and AF-I lenses are manual focusing only on this camera.  The anti-vibration feature found on some Nikon lens does not function on this body.

The included lens is the Nikkor 28-80mm f3.3-4.5AF-G.  It does not have an aperture ring, so is therefore unusable on manual focus Nikon bodies.  It is a decent optic, though it is fashionably predominantly plastic.  It provides an acceptable range of focal lengths.  It does have full function on Nikon DSLRs, and has an equivalent focal range of 42-120mm when mounted on a DX class digi-Nikon.

Frankly, it’s a feature-rich camera for the money.  The fact that it will accept Nikon manual focus lenses, and other Nikkor AF glass, makes it much more versatile than a 35mm point and shoot.  It is a “do not recommend” if you intend to use big, heavy optics, as the body mount is plastic.  I also wouldn’t suggest it for your rowdy son who would be banging it against everything.  There are plenty of older auto focus Nikons with similar features and in the same price range, like the N60; N70; N6006; and N8008s, which are better in those situations because of their construction.

This camera and lens are graded in VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT condition, with very few indications of prior use.  A front lens cap and the instruction manual are included.

Glass Disclaimer - Frequently, lenses, even when brand new, will have a slight amount of dust visible within the lens elements. This is a result of the manufacturing process and will not affect image quality or resolution. As a result, used lenses may exhibit the same consistencies.
