Nikon LS-2000 and LS-30 scanners are too good to use as paperweights. These high resolution dedicated film scanners are capable of producing image quality suitable for magazine publication. With proper servicing, they still outperform by a mile any film/slide scanner (new or used) available in the same price range. Your negatives and slides are much too valuable not to preserve. So let's get that scanning project underway! I'll do my part. Nikon charged over $300 to service these scanners, but stopped servicing them several years ago. My turn-around time is usually less than 1 week, and I back my work for 12 months.
Please check my slide and film scanning/digitizing service listing too.
If you recently purchased an LS-2000 or LS-30 scanner, you have probably found that its not performing to your expectations, or not working at all. Unless your scanner was properly serviced recently, that experience is typical. Most LS-2000 and LS-30 scanners can be restored to as-new working order. They respond quite well to proper servicing and can be expected to perform very well for many years.

If it fails to perform properly during the 12 months following your scanner servicing, I will service it again and restore it to proper working order. You will pay shipping one way.
Servicing an LS-2000 or LS-30 properly requires time and nearly complete disassembly. There are no short-cuts. My service includes required disassembly and cleaning of the light source condensers, mirrors, and the lens (The lens is cleaned, but not removed or disassembled.). The optical block and focusing block (aka, the scanning stage) are removed and their bushings cleaned with alcohol. The scanning stage rails are removed and cleaned with alcohol. The focusing guides in the lower chassis are cleaned with alcohol. Both stepper motors and their drive gears are thoroughly cleaned with alcohol. All traces of the original heavy grease lubricant are removed (critical). Everything is then lubricated with a superior, long lasting dry Teflon lubricant that will never thicken and become sticky, and won't attract dust. Your scanner is then reassembled. Any left over parts are discarded. (...Just kidding!) If the scanner firmware is not current, it will be updated* (except for Macintosh installations) to the current version (v1.31). All functions of your scanner will then be thoroughly tested and burned in. Several hours of rigorous testing and burn-in are performed using Nikon Scan 3 software on color slides, color negatives, and black and white negatives.
If your scanner has defective or missing parts, I can usually furnish replacement parts at a reasonable additional cost (some at no cost). I will advise you before installing any replacement parts. If I cannot repair your scanner your scanner, I will explain why and return your scanner and your full payment promptly. I do not charge a diagnostic fee.
A CD with the Adaptec SCSI drivers for Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, Me, and 98/98SE, as well a the latest Nikon Scan 3 control software, and an Installation Instruction sheet will be included with all serviced scanners. (Down-level firmware for scanners used on Macintosh systems will not be updated. Please see the note to Mac owners below.)
Sample Scans: The first three sample scans were made using the same scratched color negative. Brightness, Contrast, and Analog Gain were set at neutral on all three scans. All scans were made with an LS-30 scanner.
-The first sample scan was made before servicing and without the Digital ICE feature activated (dull, hazy, scratches visible).
-The second sample scan was made after servicing and also without the Digital ICE feature activated. (bright and crisp, scratches visible).
-The third sample scan was made after servicing and with the Digital ICE feature activated. (bright and crisp, scratches gone).
- The forth sample scan was made from a color negative and is a full frame scan.
- The fifth sample is an extreme crop of the forth sample scan. It demonstrates the image quality and fine detail capturing capability that can be expected of a properly serviced LS-30 or LS-2000 scanner.

Nikon Super Coolscan LS-2000 and Coolscan III LS-30 scanners are about 10 years old. Although they are built to last a lifetime, they can be expected to require maintenance at this age. The original lubricant on the scanning stage rails, focusing guides, and the gears of the two stepper motors drys to the consistency of tar. It's a problem associated with age, not use. This is especially true of scanners that have seen little or no use recently, even those that may have never been used. Also, there is likely significant accumulation of dusty film on the mirrors, condenser lenses, light source, and the scanner lens. If an un-serviced LS-2000 or LS-30 works at all, its image quality will be severely compromised. Most of the LS-2000 and LS-30 scanners listed on eBay, and elsewhere can be expected to be in this condition.

Macintosh Owners Please note: This service is intended primarily for Nikon LS-2000 and LS-30 film/slide scanners presently installed or to be installed on a PC under standard 32-bit editions of Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, Me, or 98SE. Owners of scanners installed or to be installed on Macintosh systems are advised that testing and burn-in will be performed on a PC, not on a Mac. Because of this, I am not able to offer assistance on Mac installation or re-installation. The scanner firmware for scanners to be used on a Macintosh system will not be updated. This is because (according to Nikon) the latest version of the firmware, v1.31, does not work with MacOS X. Earlier versions of the scanner firmware do work with MacOS X and the earlier 9.x versions. My guarantee and offer of follow-up service for up to 12 months is still applicable.
