Despite being a refurbished product, it appeared brand new. For an amateur photographer, this lens is just what I needed as the next step up from the 18-55 mm kit lens that came with my camera. Focus speed is adequate and the photos are clear and sharp. See photos I took at the Columbus Zoo. For the price of approximately $100, this lens is highly recommended!

ok, but maybe put the money toward a better lens
if you shoot something that is very contrasty and has a lot of detail, it will take a better photo. if you shoot a "long shot" with a lot of meadows and treelines in them, the focus will be awful. it needs a lot of contrast to focus well and also the overall image quality is soft and fuzzy on most shots. you need to shoot at a high shutter speed to get a decent result (absolute minimum 250th of a second...hopefully, 1000th or higher). the higher the shutter speed the higher the asa needed to get the shot. if you shoot closeups, i think they will look good with fast shutter speeds. i am keeping the lens because i really can't complain too much for the price of 99.95...but you get what you pay for. i suggest getting a better lens if you can afford it.

OK—but look at other options
The focal length range of this lens is great as an addition to the 18-55mm kit lens. I found the kit lens to be much sharper than this one. When wide open the 55-200 is disappointingly "soft." If you stop it down a couple of stops it improves nicely. If you 're looking for a portrait lens and want to shoot with a wide aperture, this may not be your best choice because of the sharpness issue. Many features are very likable about this lens.

The Perfect Lens!
This lens ended up being to great to pass up. It is inexpensive, and takes very crisp photos, and very nice for a kit lens. Great Bokeh when taking portraits. very smooth focusing and zooming. It's Great for Beginners and amateurs alike! Its cost and durability make it a great lens to take it on trips, You wont need to worry about losing or breaking something since it's not very expensive.
