The Nikon 1 J1 camera has excellent picture quality (including raw files), is extremely fast focusing and has fast shooting rates (up to 60 frames per second). I bought it so that I have a small camera that is easy to carry around if I do not want to drag along my bigger single lens reflex camera. The biggest negative for me is the lack of an eyepiece view finder (the more expensive v1 version has this). This means that you have to hold the camera out away from your eye so that the camera tends to move as you take the picture. The camera in autoexposure mode tends to pick a slow shutter speed so that pictures may be blurred unless a tripod is used. I avoid this by using the aperture priority mode so that I can change the aperture (lens opening) to make sure that the shutter speed is fast enough to avoid blurred images. Also the camera has an image stabilization mode so that blurry pictures are less likely at slower shutter speeds. Also the 10-30 mm lens focuses down to about 8 inches so close to macro images may be obtained. Some people may not like that the depth of field is large so it may be difficult to keep the background out of focus if, for instance, the foreground is in focus. There are a lot of other small, mirrorless cameras now that the experts have tended to give better reviews than the Nikon 1 J1, but you should be able to get a lot of excellent pictures from this camera if you are careful about the exposure speeds. I will not comment about the video since I do not often use it.Read full review
Great camera! It's versatile and the intuitive auto exposure is generally spot on. I like the compactness of it and the excellent view screen. Got it for general outdoor and macro shooting mostly. It works really great in natural light and compensates brilliantly in other light. I like the versatility in being able to add different lenses and filters. I don't like that some of the control manipulations are difficult to get to. Also, miss the hot-shoe for additional flash. Still I wanted the J1, the first generation. I'm really enjoying the performance of it so far. I may add a more powerful NIKON camera in the future, but I know I'll be using this one for years to come. It can't do all that the more advanced cameras can. And yet because of it's fidelity to taking great shots, it can be a great niche camera when you shoot subject areas it performs well in -- and there are many. Also, I bought additional batteries (not NIKON) and the camera still performs reliably.Read full review
This product takes great photos and is easy to use! Great value for the money! If you are looking for a better quality picture and a great deal this is the camera to look at. It is easy to use and has a lot of nice features like the auto scene selection and the pop up flash. With just the small lens the picture quality is amazing for the price, much better then the cheap point and shoot cameras that will only last a year or two.
This is a GREAT beginner camera for those aspiring to become a photographer or just like taking elegant pictures without your cell phone. it is super small for the quality of photo you get out of it being a mirrorless camera, and the lens system is growing quickly supporting more lenses each day. it allows you to set it to auto mode to take pictures or it can be modified by the user for those who enjoy changing all the settings and all that. the video it shoots is very clear for something that is meant for photos and the slow motion capture is very fun to play around with. overall i totally recommend this camera to people. a few of my friends who are photographers were super impressed by the image quality as they thought it would perform as a point and shoot.
GREAT CAMERA!! So many different shot opportunities! worth every penny! genius! My wife and I have done lots of shopping around to different stores and web sites. The J1 Nikon was the ultimate choice of camera because its size and weight and quality of photo. We can take the camera anywhere, all thats needed is a neck strap and memory card for an additional $25(well worth it). If you are looking into purchasing any type of camera choose Nikon since they specialize in cameras 'only' where as SONY has so many "different" products on the market...
