The Nikon Super Coolscan LS-2000 is a high resolution (2700 DPI true optical resolution) 35mm film/slide scanner. The LS-2000 employs Digital ICE technology for film defect removal. The LS-2000 has a six-element auto-focusing lens and Nikon's proprietary, cool 3-color (RGB) plus infrared (for the Digital ICE feature) LED light source that won't degrade with age and use, and won't burn out. Prior to scanning a frame the LS-2000 determines the correct exposure and focuses the lens automatically. Unlike the Nikon LS-30, LS-40, and most non-Nikon film scanners, the LS-2000 can sample (flash) an image up to 16 times in a single pass and then combine the data into a single image file. This very important feature virtually eliminates digital noise in the shadow areas of the photo. The importance of the multi-sampling capability cannot be overstated. And because the multi-sampling is accomplished in a single pass, the possibility of registration errors is eliminated. The LS-2000 produces a clean, sharp, finely detailed, full frame (24x36mm), digital image greater than 10 megapixels ( 3894h x 2592w and nearly 58 Mb ), and 36 bit true color depth (12 bits per RGB channel). With a pro quality film/slide scanner like the LS-2000 photographers need not give up the unmatched flexibility and control of film photography, and still enjoy the convenience of digital image processing, distribution, and printing. Nikon Super Coolscan LS-2000 and Coolscan III LS-30 scanners are 10+ years old. Although they are built to last a lifetime, they can be expected to require maintenance at this age. The original lubricant on the scanning stage rails, focusing guides, and the drive gears of the two stepper motors drys to the consistency of candle wax. This is especially true of scanners that have seen little or no use recently. Also, there is likely significant accumulation of dusty film on the mirrors, condenser lenses, light source, and the scanner lens. If an un-serviced LS-2000 or LS-30 works at all, its image quality will be severely compromised. Unless specifically described to the contrary, most of the LS-2000 and LS-30 scanners listed on eBay and elsewhere can be expected to be in this condition.Read full review
This is an older model negative and slide film scanner, as a result it uses an older SCSI interface which is a little mor difficult to setup than USB or Firewire, but that aside it is rock solid and performs brilliantly. It is Nikon so the optics are excellent. ICE is included so 95% of dust and small scratches are dealt with. The TIF file output is great so you can create a pretty decent size hgh res print output. There is a choice of set of negatives for auto batch scanning and a manual holder for single slides or negatives. Overall, it works very nicely indeed.
A high quality machine that produces high resolution digitized images from transparencies. The downside is you need to pair it with an ADAPTEC 1460D Slim SCSI if you can find one, and download the drivers from the Adaptec site if you plan to use it with a modern laptop. Mine finally worked after much effort using Windows XP. The copy process takes alomost 1 1/2 minutes per slide. That's a lot of time if you have 86 slide trays. I'll be 86 when I'm finished. Tom
If you're scanning medium or large format, flatbeds are great, but this old LS-2000 is better for 35 mm film.

A very reasonably priced product. Nikon LS2000 uses the thin SCSI interface. I have a converter to USB, but drivers and converters to make it work with a PC are not working out. I will have to build a Windows 2000 system to use this scanner. It is still the best scanner available and this one just needed a little cleaning and it comes ready.
