  THE PANAMA HAT STORY: During the California Gold Rush, 49"ers crossing the isthmus of Panama found a practical and elegant protector from sun, a finely straw hat. Although it was made in Ecuador, they called it a Panama Hat. The Panama Hat is renowned for its fineness of weave, strength and lightness. It is hand-woven from straw obtained from the bleached leaves of the Toquilla Palm. Placing the wooden mold on their knees, the weavers begin plaiting al the crown, slowly and carefully weaving out to the brim. The end result is a very beautiful hand-made product.
