Good Lead, great supporting cast, and very good screenplay. The music is good and good direction. I saw this movie when it came out and it is very good today.

Throughout the 1960s, the Walt Disney company released a series of feture-length family films that have since become legendary favorites. At decade's end, they issued "The Love Bug" to theaters in 1969. Starring the likable Dean Jones as racer Jim Douglas, Michelle Lee as Carole Bennett and funnyman Buddy Hackett as Tennessee Steinmetz, the film became an imediate hit, eventually scoring as the number one movie of the year at the box office. What started out as a simple film idea quickly evolved into a classic motion picture franchise that still is as popular today as ever. This first film was eventually followed by four theatrical sequels; "Herbie Rides Again" (1974), "Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo" (1977), "Herbie Goes Bananas" (1980) and "Herbie Fully Loaded" (2005). But, it was the first film in this series that many people still know and remember. "The Love Bug" was technically innovative for its time, specifically with its driving sequences; especially making it seem as though Herbie is driving by himself, the same gimmick that would be utilized in the four sequels. In each film, he has his own unique and distinctive personality. David Thomlinson, who also appeared in the Disney films "Bedknobs And Broomsticks" and "Mary Poppins", is perfect here as the villainous Peter Thorndyke. Particularly amusing is the scene where he intoxicates Herbie with Irish coffee. And, who could ever forget when he wound up in Herbie's glove compartment? Herbie has proven, time and time again, exactly why he is such a favorite movie icon throughout the entire world. It is a lot fun to view the entire series of films, but "The Love Bug" is where it all began.Read full review

My son is very much into all the new talking cars, as well as a collector of the Chevron talking cars. We rented the newer version of The Love Bug, and he loved it so much, I just had to find the original movie, so he could see "Herbie" do some amazing things, when he was first created (late 1970's). Owning it makes it great, as we can watch it any time.
The film is a laughfest and the real star of the movie is a 1963 Volkswagen bug named Herbie. I loved the film, but the thing I did not like was Peter Thorndyke, portrayed by David Tomlinson, who schemed to get rid of Herbie by hook or by crook. In the end, Herbie wins the "Run For The Gold" (although he literally split in two) and Thorndyke and his henchman Havershaw wind up working for Mr. Woo, portrayed by Benson Fong. I decided to purchase the film because I am a sucker for Disney classic movies. THE LOVE BUG will tickle your funny bone, so get the film on eBay while it's available.
