Konami's classic arcade hit gets a port on the Nintendo Entertainment System by Ultra; Konami's spin-off developer for NES games. The arcade version was simple by design but entertaining and challenging to play. The NES port adds so much extra stuff that it only looks and feels like Gyruss. Once the game play begins, it's easy to see that the only thing Gyruss is the ship and how it moves. Players embark on a space journey (arcade-style) through planet systems starting with Pluto and ending with Earth. Reaching each planet requires a set number of warps (sub-levels). At each warp, the player battles enemy spacecrafts in order to advance the game. In the arcade version, the player was presented with a Chance Stage to earn bonus points. This NES port remains true to the arcade port on that note with the exception that a new set of enemies and bosses add to the challenge. Enemy ships have a different appearance in this port; probably due to the NES' capabilities over the arcade ancestor. The sounds are top-notch and in a style that Konami was known for on other NES titles. Some of the music is fitting and shows some heritage while others sound more like remakes of music from other Konami titles (most notably Castlevania). Controls are quick responding, in someways better than the arcade version. Unlike the arcade version the player has an additional weapon from the standard weapon that wipes out anything in its path. The game is a fun game to play and worthy of being in any NES collection. However, those looking for an alternative to the actual arcade may want to look elsewhere as this game fails in that department in my opinion. Sadly, not many home consoles received a port of this classic arcade with the only two I know of being the NES and the Atari 5200. For those wanting a port that is very close to the arcade version, I'd recommend the 5200 port.Read full review

This game is a classic, and it was quite innovative for it's time. It has an unusual structure that will leave you wondering why more shooterspaceship games aren't made this good. It's challenging me still to this day, and if you've seen enough of Space Invaders, Galaga etc., this will be right up your alley. It was recently released on Virtual Console for Wii, but the remake is nowhere near as good as the original, they ruined it! I won't get into the games specifics as this is just my opinion, but buy an old copy today and you will be thrilled!
This is a classic game. You fight in space against other spaceships. Very nice!
