GREEK & ROMAN GODS - COPPER ENGRAVING
This 200 year old copper engraving was rescued from Pierre Bouillon's "MUSEE DES ANTIQUES" published in Paris by Didot, L'Aine, Publisher to the King, in c1811.
The Engraver was Pierre Bouillon (1776-1831) of Thiviers. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris with the Academie-trained history painter Monsiau. He was awarded the grand prize of the Instiut de France. This neoclassical painter and engraver has paintings in the French national museums. The production and publication of "Musee des Antiques" took Bouillon over ten years to complete.
The large print is in very good condition, with minimal, usual age toning and occasional foxing (see pics). The image (platemark) is about 16 1/2" x 12" on a page that is about 21 1/2 " x 13 1/2 ". The woven paper is high grade and thick. It is suitable for framing and would be an excellent gift.
This print is rare. The books sell for up to $2,400 on the Internet. These Greek art prints and Greek nude prints have been used in modern anatomy reference books. Individual engravings from the Musee des Antiques books sell for up to $350.
Relief is a sculptural technique. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. What is actually performed when a relief is cut in from a flat surface of stone or wood is a lowering of the field, leaving the unsculpted parts seemingly raised. The technique thus involves considerable chiselling away of the background, which is a time-consuming exercise with little artistic effect if the lowered background is left plain, as is often the case. On the other hand, a relief saves forming the rear of a subject, and is less fragile and more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round, especially one of a standing figure where the ankles are a potential weak point, especially in stone.
There are different degrees of relief depending on the degree of projection of the sculpted form from the field, for which the Italian appellations are still sometimes used. The full range includes high relief (alto-rilievo), where more than 50% of the depth is shown and there may be undercut areas, mid-relief (mezzo-rilievo), low-relief (basso-rilievo, or French: bas-relief),
