Mekong Giant Banana

Mekong Giant Banana, PPAF  - Very cold hardy Banana Plant. Down to Zone 6 when well mulched.

Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannaensis) Musa xishuangbannaensis. Newly discovered species of cold-hardy giant banana from Yunnan, China.

This selection can bring a tropical look to more northern gardens, as it can over winter in freezing temperatures and come back again. Selected from a native that grows from the Mekong Delta to the Tibetan Plateau, the fruit on this plant is purple, accenting the olive-green foliage and red-to-purple streaked trunk. Growing to 15' tall with a 4' canopy in zone 6, this plant can grow much taller and wider in southern climates.

Questions about plants, plant size, delivery? Please see my Frequently Asked Questions Page.

Hardiness information we provide is gathered from various sources and has been confirmed over the years by many of our own customers who live in colder areas. It is believed it to be accurate. The banana is a tender perennial. The above ground portion WILL die back in even short durations of freezing or frosty weather. In zones lower than 11, 10, and 9, where there may be prolonged cold a good mulching around the base of the stem is helpful to prevent the underground portion from freezing. Given this protection, bananas usually regrow in the spring. The starter bananas we ship (as with all perennials) should only be planted in the ground when there will be sufficient time for them to become established before the onset of cold weather. Fall and winter is an ideal time to start growing bananas but for most people they should be planted into a larger pot and brought into or kept in the house whenever day or night temperatures will fall below 45 - 50 degrees. The warmer the more quickly they will grow. This way a banana can grow to a good size by spring and thus get a head start on the new season.

Please Read Before Bidding

We specialize in unusual and obscure varieties of plants not offered at most garden centers.

The Five Most Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. How big are the plants?

A. They are usually shipped in 6 oz. pots. In order to give you the most value for your money we try to keep these plants under 8 inches high because they will grow rapidly to full size after you receive them. This affords you the greatest value for your money and keeps your shipping costs to a minimum. Sizes vary by variety and are usually indicated in the ad. In order to get your plants to you in a timely fashion we will in rare cases ship plants that are smaller than indicated. These plants are an exceptional value and will soon grow to the size indicated and beyond.

Q. How long will it take to receive my plants?

A. Plants.  Our goal is to ship plants within 5 – 10 days after we receive payment (or check clears.) 95% of shipments are within that time frame with over half being less than 10 days. (If your plants don’t arrive in this time period please email us if we haven’t emailed you first.)

A. Plant Supplies. Usually ship in less than 7 days. If it will be longer we’ll contact you.

Q. How can I know when they will arrive?

A. You will be emailed the day they are shipped. The email will contain a confirmation number with instructions for tracking and confirming at USPS.com.

Q. I emailed but you didn’t respond.

A. If you don’t receive a prompt answer, please check that our emails are not being blocked or deleted at your end. If you don’t receive a reply, 9 times out of 10 that’s why.

Q. What if I’m not pleased?

A. If you’ve read this far we’re pretty sure you’ll be pleased but sometimes we make mistakes, plants/weather don’t cooperate, or a package is damaged in transit. For whatever reason, if you are not pleased we ask that you contact us before leaving feedback. (Ebay® says to do this: [Feedback Instructions] “If you have a dispute, contact your trading partner to try and resolve the dispute before leaving feedback.)” We work very hard to ensure that you are 100% satisfied and that you have success with your plants.
