Item specifics

Binding: Hardcover Special Attributes: 1st Edition, Illustrated
Subject: Children's Printing Year: 1911
Topic: Fairy Tales & Fantasy Origin: American
Up for your consideration is a rare, vintage, first edition (printed in USA) of "Old Mother West Wind's Children" by Thornton W. Burgess, and printed 1911.  I have included a close-up photo of the copyright information for this specimen.  Original colorful dust cover and original light brown hardcover cloth cover and interior photos describe this fantastic First Edition

I am not a professional bookseller or collector and will, therefore, let the photographic representation of this specimen speak primarily for itself.  I will, however, add my own observations of condition in addition to the photos.  The original dust cover of this book shows wear not unexpected from a children's book of this vintage.  Tears, missing paper pieces and smudges are clearly visible as depicted on outer cover.  However, the DCs are mainly in good shape and show bright colors of the authors fantastical characters that are so appealing to young minds.  Removal of the DC shows the light brown hardcover boards of this book are in excellent shape with almost no wear showing at the outer corners or along edges.  By appearances, this book has spent the majority of its protected life on the shelf; apparently read, but by careful adults who took care of this text after bedtime story reading.   Overall, I was very excited to find this 1st edition book in such good condition from the perspective of how antique books, particularly children's books, often present (to me) after years of movement, handling, shelf storage, etc...if they survive at all.

The cover title and spine impressions show almost no wear and demonstrate original, vivid forest green and burgundy coloration.  As you can see from the pictures, there is some "antiquing" (tanning) of the paper on the insides of both the front and rear cover, consistent with 100 years of age since publication.  I believe that this is common for literature of this vintage.  The pink coloration on the back dust cover does show some "bleeding", some of which may have come off of other "in series" books on front and/or back of dust cover while stored next to this example.  I have done nothing to improve the appearance of this item.  I did not attempt to clean or correct any aspect/element of this item...preferring to leave it in original, as recovered condition.  This book was received from the estate of a 100 year old friend.  All pages are present in this book and all of the original illustrations are present.  In this specimen, one of the illustrations, the first one, is loose, but that is all.  If I were to summarize my impressions of this specimen, I'd say this is a very fine, solid and tight, collectible copy that is proper for its for its age and a nice, very collectible example of children's classic literature in prime condition.  But, with that said, please ensure that you look carefully for yourself to ensure that all of your questions are answered either pictorily or by asking me in person.  I most certainly don't want any disappointed buyers.

If you look around the Internet, you'll find similar examples of this book selling for handsome prices at the prestige rare book sellers.  I'm not expecting these type of prices for this book, but I may have a reasonable reserve if indicated.  Please look over the pictures carefully and ask any question before bidding; I'll be more than to answer whatever I can and also to take and forward more pictures if needed.  I want any true collectors of vintage books to be fully satisfied with this item and because I am not a professional bookseller, want to ensure as much clarity of understanding as possible.  I consider payment (Paypal) within 48 hours of auction end to be reasonable and I will expect this from buyer.  I will ship via USPS (Priority Mail only) within 48 hours of verified payment...That said, I usually get items sent within 24 hours.  I have this book for sale locally and so reserve the right to end auction early if I find a buyer in VA.  Those whom are interested and local are welcome to see this book in person by sending me a question with contact information.  I will not ship to international locations, I will ship to contiguous US destinations only, so other international location buyers please do not bid.  Thank you for looking and I hope you find this item both interesting and a good value considering its vintage, rarity and great condition.  This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of Thornton W. Burgess, American, children's literary history without paying the high prices offered from the professionals.  Thanks very much!
